TVA votes to retire three coal-fired plants in TN
#1 Apr 21, 2011
TVA really was dirty in the way this was done. Just a few months ago, employees were assured that the plan was to move ahead to put scrubbers on the two remaining units at John Sevier. People made career decisions based on this as well as let other job opportunities pass. Some employees were prevented from going to the new gas plant, just so the coal plant would have enough people to staff it. All the while, TVA was negotiating the plant away in a deal with the EPA and the tree-huggers. This plant was just recognized by an industry group as being a top performer. Local plant management were duped as well. TVA has to have generation at this site and perhaps this was done so the coal plant would have staffing to run until the gas plant is finished. Just because the deal with the EPA had to remain confidential, doesn't mean employees had to be mislead.
