Considering that potentially dangerous matierials are transported on the train now, I don't see why this company is responsible for rail safety. We need jobs, we need alternative fuels, we need to build the tax base in this county. I am sure that various chemicals were used at these mills in their previous incarnation. So long as the company follows state and federal laws, we should be welcoming them with open arms, not setting up roadblocks.

Did you know that 1/3 of US agriculture goes toward biofuels, causing millions globally to starve?

Thank you for your sanity Rickf. For some reason this community thinks that anyone that wants to bring their business to the Berkshires is somehow plotting evil against us instead of offering us jobs, tax paymnets and community support.
Also, if you actually investigate, none of the feedstock that this company uses has anything to do with people starving. They use waste products that would otherwise have to be disposed of into the environment. The product that will come into the site is completely treated and innocuous. This is first-hand and informed knowledge. This community should try it sometime. |

I am all for creating jobs and decreasing our dependance on foreign oil. I fully support the creation of plants that will process what is now considered waste into something that is fuel. What I am oposed to is the siting of this particular venture. The people that are raising the issue of the potential for oil in the river should not be critized as being nimbys. This plant does not need to be sited where a potential spill could cause catastrophic environmental damage.
As for the people proposing this venture saying they are not responsible for the rail line safety to their plant, one must be reminded that historically railroads have been some of the biggest contributors to environmental polution because of the very fact that they carry large amounts of hazardous material and S __ T happens. Not too very long ago, a train derailed just south of the location of this proposed facility and some of the rail cars ended up in the river. If the rail cars had contained oil, the clean-up would still be going on. By all means, build the biodiesel plant but use common sense and build it where it cannot harm the environment or negatively effect the neighborhood. |
It is not the problem or the doing of the U.S. that people are starving in other countries. It is their problem for letting the swine that run their country wake up every morning. |
