I'd like to recommend the movie "WAL-MART: THE HIGH COST OF LOW PRICE."

Here's the website: http://www.walmartmovie.com/about.php

It really is amazing. I really shuddered when I read this. Can you image all our small grocery stores being run out of business until there's no where to go except Walmart's new little stores and then they can raise the prices and carry only their own brands. The residents of each neighborhood will have to choose from what Walmart puts on the shelf? It will destroy regional food cultures, small food suppliers etc.

And Walmart food from China will probably be just like the toys with lead.. poor quality control.

NO to Walmart!!!

Chicago's economic development people should immediately lobby to get some of these food stores in the
neighborhoods which have not had food markets for a long time. Aldermen too. We need comprehensive food markets!!!!

I've been in Wal*Mart's Tucson grocery store. Cross between a Gordon's Food Service and the old Cub Foods. Big portion/packages semi-warehouse display. Open 24 hours WITH a pharmacy. Smaller parking lot so the walk isn't that bad; in-store tortilla factory which is a big thing in Tucson.

It wasn't really all that big.

I've long predicted that Whole Foods and Wild Oats would not last much longer as viable models...too pricey, not that big a selection, and "organics" that if you read the nutrition labels, could benefit from fat/calorie/sugar cutting chemicals.

It won't be Wal*Mart that takes out Whole Foods et al though, it'll be Tesco.

Tesco stores in London have it all over Whole Foods, unless you're a stubborn organic/vegan/snob with too much money to run through your digestive tract.

As for Wal*Mart's plans...20,000 square feet is fairly small, and at that size you're competing not only with larger grocers, but also with convenience stores and gas station markets. I think they may stumble in that niche. No mention of a pharmacy in these smaller stores?

No if it's not good then people won't buy things from them. How can you picture a scenario where Wal Mart sell low quality and high priced goods and still other small grocery stores are closing down?

Interesting Business Cycle lesson here. My Dad had a couple of neighborhood Grocery Stores years ago that were eventually put out of business by the much larger A&P's. Now smaller is back. Makes sense to me. Folks love convenience.

If Wal-Mart continues to run everyone else out of business, we won't have any choice. Not to mention that if they continue to import everything from China there will be no jobs here to afford to buy anything. They are causing more harm than good.

I hope they don't become too common. If they drive out the other stores that provide health insurance to employees (Jewel, Dominicks, Etc.) then that will be more "Walmartians" on Illinois medicare, and more cost shifting and higher prices on everyone else's health insurance, including mine. Also I don't like the Illinois income tax evasion tactics used to not show any profit on the books by paying "rent" to "Walmart real estate holdings" at an out of state address, while other stores actually pay their taxes. This has been outlawed in most states. I find most of what I need can be gotten cheaper if I stock up at "buy one get one free" sales at Jewel, Dominicks, etc. I avoid shopping at Wallmart as much as I can.

Daily Horoscope for June 4

Pisces

Relationships are kind of shaky under this Lunar Cycle and you may even get the distinct impression you're heading for a major showdown with a certain someone. Although this feels like a crisis, don't let panic or desperation push you into decisions you would normally steer clear of. You may think you've reached the end of the road, but this isn't a good reason to go off the deep end and make drastic decisions. Proceed with caution!
