And many, many people live great on $16 per hour. $16 might be ok for some part-time work, or if you're an ex-con, but that's about it. Anyone who thinks they can live 'great' off of a $16 per hour full-time job must have pretty low self-esteem not to value their own work any higher.

Get a clue. GM employees were promised that there wouldn't be job cuts, and the next week after they signed their contract it was announced that - what'dya know - there would be job cuts and buyouts. It's nice that you are rich enough not to get out of bed for $16/hr. As for me, I don't find that $16 is nothing to sneeze at, and the workers making $16 will last longer than the ones making $30. It's called ECONOMICS. The work I do is in the oil industry and I work for the largest oil company in America. I understand that eventually this country isn't going to be nearly as dependent on oil. But, that isn't going to happen in my working lifetime, so I am not too concerned about it. Maybe that is a poor attitude to have but it is my attitude. As for my job being cut because sales are down?? Not going to happen. Oil is at an all time record high right now, and fuel consumption has not dropped any in the last 2 years in this state, or most of the country for that matter. Maybe my grand kids will need to be concerned about this, but by the time they are old enough to work, I wouldn't want them doing the type of job I do anyway. As for being "rich" enough not to get out of bed for $16/hr, I dont consider myself rich at all. Just barely making a living. But, I dont think I could live on $16/hr and dont want to ever have to try. Those of you that live a lifestyle supported by $16/hr and are happy, well thats great. I have a wife that has expensive taste.

I have expensive tastes, too. Went to college so I could get a job to support those tastes. Can't find one, so I do what I can. Can't justify not going to work at all. You do what you can, apply yourself to what you are doing, try to put yourself in a better position to get that elusive $30/hr job. I have family members who make $8 -$10 per hr and that's what they can do at this time. It's tough out there, and you do what you can and get by. I'll get there eventually, but not through a union.

I work for STARBUCKS as a coffee roaster. It is by far the best job I have ever had in my life. They give very good pay and benefits far beyond the other employers in my area. I don't have credible information about this persons problem so I won't comment on it. I can say that my fellow employees and I are treated very well by Starbucks at our plant.People love to say bad things about Starbucks these days, but I for one will stand up for a company that goes beyond the bare minimum that it has to for it's people. I think our ceo Howard Shultz is a very good person too.
