Giant Eagle? Toysrus?? I ain't working at them places. I'm too good for that. I think I'll just suck up some more unemployment unless someone offers me some big bucks. Oh well, I am going back to bed. Have a nice day at work, ya'll.

Take special note of the 'benefits' bestowed upon the banksters and the foreign banksters. The political class is the betrayal class and the little people get to grouse over some crumbs called unemployment benefits.

Shows to go ya that it's easier to mooch free money for some than it is to try. The lower job may not be an all inclusive answer. I have been unemployed in the past and have taken lower jobs but every morning I woke up and still had my pride.

Yeah, Giant Eagle is hiring for permanent workers while the workers they have now are only getting 15 hours a week and have told them they want more hours but can't get them because they are hiring more people! Way to go Giant Eagle!

So some employers are frustrated that they don't have cream of the crop to pick from? Welcome to the recovery folks, a lot of us, myself included have had to start over in new fields. I'm loyal, never quit a job, I don't complain about my rights and how long I've been working without a lunch or break, I've always beaten my sales and other goals, yet some of you wouldn't even give me the chance to interview. Now its your turn. I found a great job in a new field and trust me there are thousands of us out here who were burned by certain employers who will never give those employers a chance again. I think Karma will really come into play for some of the more cocky ones who treated applicants badly for so long.

contrary to law and popular opinion, if you're over 40 your chances of getting hired even at a fast food place are minimal.

You want to draw unemployment, make them work for it...There must be something they can do in State, Federal, City and County jobs..I know of at least 4 people drawing unemployment and do not want to work or even look for work...

If so, it's no wonder you were laid off. There are an awful lot of sales guys out there still looking for work. Kudos to you for recognizing that being a sales guy equates to no job security. Making the switch to something else is the best thing you could do at times like these. When the economy is good a good sales guy can make a killing. When the economy is bad and sales are down, being a sales guy is very tough. So many people just aren't willing to try something new and make the switch.

I don't agree with your comment at all. Most of the young people I have in my class I tell them: A. You have to have a driver's license. B. Don't smoke any weed because most employers do a drug screen. So, Don't even THINK about asking me to get you a job if you fall under this category because it is fruitless! If you are 40+, do you fall under these 2 things?

Getting hired ANYWHERE when you are over 40 is tougher unless you are a professional. It is true that fast food places don't want you unless you are going to hire directly into a management position. And most of those are already filled. You would also need plenty of experience to do that. But there are still plenty of jobs out there beyond fast food places that someone over 40 could go to. Fast food jobs are the easy way out. They are obvious so young people go there when they don't want to make the effort to find something better. As a kid, I never worked fast food. Instead, I found a job at a small local business and learned valuable skills to help me through life. You just don't get that working at a fast food joint. There are lots of little jobs out there at small businesses you never even knew existed. So many people are blind to these jobs because they aren't big companies like Walmart, McDonalds, or Nationwide. If you want a job, change your focus to the multitude of little businesses that are still hiring.

There are employers out there that feeling the "control" they have over the "little man" I know someone who went down several knotches in the employment arena only to be worked like 8 sled dogs. Was told in the interview one thing and then when hired it was a different story. A 40 hr wk job as promised turned out to be 70+ M-F work week turned out to be every other Sat. Then every Sat. Sorry can't give you 2 days off in a row. Sun & Tues (days off) BUT THE ICING ON THE CAKE WAS....Reported to work at 10:00am (hrs 10-7) and left the following morning at 2:00 a.m. So I agree, don't whine Mr. Employer because you cannot get good people, when you think you can get away with the above because so many people are hurting.

ahh, dear most likely tenured taxes2death.... tenured being the key to that line. makin' the bucks, nice retirement plan, good benefits. yes, you can teach those things. the drug test part is correct. btw, grass can and will show up at any time, particularly stressful situations. not a problem for me. please refer to the I9 as required by law to prove eligibility to work in the US. a driver's license is not required. certain positions may require a license but to be legally employed - absolutely not. tell you what, you send me your resume, i'll send you mine and lets see who gets hired first.

I just read a comment from an employer who said he wouldn't hire anyone over 50 due to potential health care costs. There are TONS of HR articles about this problem. Or look at recent letters to the editor about how those over 50 are driving up employers' health care costs.

If you get unemployment benefits for 99 weeks, and Congress is talking about extending them, why would you go stock shelves? Amazing how many people find work after benefits finally expire. BTW-The extent of my benefits is I am entitled to a 15 minute break if I'm scheduled to work 5 hrs.

The little businesses, as I've seen it, cannot compete benefit-wise, and medical insurance is pretty important if you're an older worker.

Fast food joints are temporary jobs. Short term. Low paying. Will not sustain anybody not supported and supplemented by others. Fast food joints depend on relatives and welfare to supplement their cost of doing business. Fast food joints are there just to show you how low on the income ladder you can go without being unemployed. True, some people can't find it in themselves to take a less than career oriented position. "Looks bad on the resume'", they say. That empty time looks worse on a resume, doesn't it? Let's see some initiative here.

Breaks are a fringe benefit, for sure: "As of January, 2010, the U.S. Department of Labor does not include Ohio on its list of states that require short rest breaks. This places Ohio with the majority of jurisdictions, as only eight states require companies to give breaks to workers. The Ohio Bureau of Labor & Worker Safety enforces Ohio's labor laws. These laws include the state's Minimum Wage Laws, Prevailing Wage Law and Child Labor Law. Only Ohio's Minor Labor Law requires that employers give breaks to workers." Let's see some initiative here. What's the average 2 bedroom in apartment in the Columbus area,$750 month? You need more than minimum wage to cover the basics - utilities, car/renter's insurance, etc., and that's with no cable or cell phone or anything extra. Doesn't it make more sense to try your darndest to get a better paying position, at least for a little while?
