I have a question how does a School Teacher and a Liquor Store, Part owner I am assuming, afford this exotic cruise? That aside, I feel for the widow here, no one goes on any vacation, let alone, a honeymoon expecting to lose their spouse!

Please wait...
Maybe they saved up for it, maybe it was a wedding present from their parents, maybe they just charged it - who knows. And what's that got to do with anything, anyhow? They went, they got absolutely hammered one night and he did a header off an awning and fell into the water, probably getting sucked under the boat or just drifted out to see. Either way, she's a widow and this is just a sad story. The only lesson to be learned from this is not to get so crocked that you end up doing stupid stuff, like, oh, I don't know - dying.

Sad story. The liquuor industry provided for the man's family, he worked in a wine shop and died, unfortunately, after drinking. It seems as the wife is not at fault. Who were the people in the stateroom prior to the fall? Hope the man's family gets some closure. The wife did nothing more than the husband...excess liquor. Many times that happens on ships. The Captain is in charge on the seas...international law and he's the sheriff. They don't keep investigators on the ship to police the rowdy passengers. And there are rowdy, drunks on cruises. That is what alot of young people do on these cruises......drink.

OMG...relax it was just a question! I do feel for widow and find it ironic that the groom was done in by alcohol. Also, I am not sure what his parents expect the cruise line to do? The guy fell overboard after a night of consuming illegal alcohol. Where does his responsibility start?

Hindsight is always better than foresight. I hope and pray that healing will take place for both families...this is certainly a tragic death and what words of comfort do you offer both families at this time. It is at this time that no answer of man seems to touch those deep inner needs. No amount of money or "happy" talk appears to help at these times. She appears to keep herself busy doing philanthropic work and that is good, but I pray that she also is a face (spokeswoman) for the dangers of alcohol in our society.

God did not make junk...unless you are a deviation from the norm or an anamoly. My prayer goes out to both families at this time and I pray God would bring healing in their lives and closure to this case. Jesus is still in the healing business.

$1.08 Million from the cruise line for using really poor judgment and killing yourself. Sweet.

Great reporting. Why not interview the Smiths' or their attorney to indicate what they believe happened? What is their side of the story?

The story seems very one-sided. No mention of the Smith family perspective -- they lost their son.

"Hagel, in an interview with The Courant, said she shares the Smith family's devastation and grief over the loss." Uh-huh, she was devastated all right. As a poster said above, why didn't the Courant talk to the Smiths? Or is the idea of getting both sides of a story part of the 'old' journalism? So she can spread her version of what happened even though, by her own admission, she was passed out and was elsewhere. Now THAT is reliable! And according to what I've read, she initially was with the Smiths in filing a suit against the cruise line that wanted to keep the investigation going. Then, out of the blue, she backs out of the suit. Lo and behold, she then is eligible for a payment of more than $1 million from the cruise line after withdrawing from the suit, as the marriage made her next of kin. So on the one hand, George's family wants to keep the investigation going. On the other hand, this lady cashes in and says the cruise line has done everything that it could do. Funny how $1 million or so can affect your feelings of true devotion, right?

"It's OK if this case lasts forever," Hagel said, "because I can heal." Right! It's all about you, ma'am. Meanwhile ... "Hagel Smith, who was having a massage, did not hear her name paged but spa personnel responded. She initially told ship's officers, according to a Royal Caribbean chronology, that she believed her husband had slept elsewhere on the ship after a night of heavy drinking, and she was not alarmed by his absence." Well, that's pretty clear. I mean, doesn't everyone who drinks enough to pass out in the hall get a massage the next morning? And the newlywed wife was "not alarmed by his absence"? When she refers to "a night of heavy drinking," was it his or hers? What is clear is that she let Royal Caribbean off the hook by saying 'enough is enough' and not pressing for a further investigation ... and in return, she got $1 million or so. So both Royal Caribbean and Jennifer Hagel-Smith came out of this tragedy relatively unscathed. And how about George Smith and his family?

Okay, just one more thing. It says: "Bloodstains on the canopy over the lifeboats were detected several hours after the ship had made port in Kusadasi." Is the reporter aware that a passenger with no connection to either of these people took a photo of cruise ship personnel trying to scrub off these same bloodstains? That interesting fact doesn't bolster the reputation of Royal Caribbean, in my eyes ... some people might think it was their duty to preserve possible evidence ... but I guess the main point is that Jennifer Hagel-Smith "can heal." The lead to this story says that George Smith "dropped from the balcony." The reporter is, of course, aware that cruise ships have protective railings to prevent people from falling over. If they are thrown, that is a different issue. I am sure that the Courant could find out about some of the suspicious things in this case, if it cares to look.
