From the article, "Some might say they're creepy and kooky, mysterious and spooky, even all together ooky."
I wonder if the Vacaville Reporter obtained copyright permission to use this line from the 1964 sitcom "The Addams Family."

Free advertizing for PETCO. Come to the rally (at our store) and then buy a reptile and all of the paraphernalia needed, too.

But newspapers don't need copyright permission for stories. However, the writer should not have used "ooky" unless it was in quotations because ooky is not a word.

Isn't Petco the store that sells ailing pets, or is dirty or something like that?

According to the AP Style Book on my bookshelf, the reporter, Kim Fu should have attributed the line (in quotes) to the lyricist who actually wrote the Addams Family theme song, Vic Muzzy (1916 - 2009). I'm sure Reporter Editor Karen will add some wisdom here today.

Of course attribution is required in most cases, but I'm quite certain that rule doesn't apply here because the line from the song was changed; the story was not about the TV program, etc. lol Karen Nolan is the opinion page editor...now let's hear from Robin Miller!

Until people tire of them and release them in the neighborhood...the first time I found a lizard (I think it was a gecko) in my backyard, I figured it had escaped...that was until several different type of reptiles began showing up on a regular basis. I caught them and gave them away to those who like them and provide for them in their natural habitat...I had a tortoise come crawling into my backyard not too long ago but fortunately, she/he/it had escaped from their home and the neighbor came looking for it...it was kind of cute though, I was going to keep that one!!!
