Far from my religion tempering my prejudices, racial prejudice was actually instilled in me by my evangelical Christian church. I grew up in North Carolina in what we call the Bible Belt. My church taught me that segregation was the will of God and quoted the Bible to prove it. It taught me that men were by nature superior to woman and quoted the Bible to prove it. It taught me that it was o.k. to hate other religions, and especially the Jews, and quoted the Bible to prove it. It taught me that homosexual persons were either mentally sick or morally depraved and, of course, quoted the Bible to prove it. So the idea that being religious might make one less prejudiced is a fantasy. It appears to make people more prejudiced, or at the least, not to confront their prejudices.

Thats crazy because I am from North Carolina and that was NEVER taught, by anyone that I knew with the exception of a few nuts here and there.

All I can say is you must have gone to one whacked out church. Did they have a KKK on the front doors and a preacher with a hood and two eye holes cut out? A bunch of gas cans in the back? Just curious. I have been to a great number of churches in NC and not one of them teaches this stuff. As a matter of fact, I was a minister in NC before going back in the Marine Corps and knew ministers all over the state. None of them taught this in the way you portray.

all bull I way born and raised in oklahoma and went to a methodists church tell I was around 15 when I was aloud not to go. I told my parents that I did not believe and it would be better to not make me go. I have run into many that do feel that way.Many use the bible todo so nasty stuff to fellow man.

People have been experts at taking things that were good and turning them into horrific things. Look at weapons like the atomic bomb. It didnt start off as a weapon and its original designers said if they new how it would work and be used, they wouldnt have invented it. Its people that are the problem with religion, not the religion itself.
