They call it suspicious....gotta love that. Are they suggesting someone went and rounded up a few of these owls and planted them there?

The greed of these people is staggering. Leave the damn land alone and fix up an already developed area for your precious water park.

A water park. Isn't there already a water park in or near Riverhead? We need two of them?

Wouldn't it be a hoot if this owl is also spotted at the Jones Beach boardwalk, bringing that project to a screeching halt?

Hooray!!!!!!!!!!
Grumman property has been a haven for all kinds of animals for a long, long time. Oh how I love to see that greed thwarted! When I lived in Manorville, near the Grumman property, I had flying squirrels at my suet feeders but was told that they are not endangered and that the development behind my house could not be stopped.

Suffolk has become uninhabitable for most animals at this point.

Again I say Hooray!!!! Gotta love those owls!

Carl Hiaasen wrote a book about this called "Hoot" It was about a teenage boy who tried to save endangered owls that the greedy developers didn't care about.

I think it is great that the guy thinks that it is "suspicious" that a migratory bird from Canada would end up on Long Island during the winter. I guess he has never heard of Canadian Geese either.

Since moving here to the East End nearly ten years ago,my family friends and I have seen and heard the owls. Riverhead town supervisor Cardinale's "suspicions" the endangered birds are a figment of environmentalists' imaginations is laughable and absurd. He supports constructing in the Pine Barrens an energy sapping, 30 story eyesore indoor ski mountain and belittles any complaint the resort will harm the environment. Yet Cardinale opposses Broadwater (a LNG plant 9 miles offshore in LI Sound) fearing it would destroy the local fisheries and tarnish the aesthetics of the waterway.

Know why this Owl is endangered? because of all the developments being built that fail, such as the
Patchogue outlets.
Is this good for Long Island? I am all for this shi_ not being built.

Notice how many Long Islanders are opposed to more development, but yet somehow the REITs and developers still have their way? That's because they buy the politicians!
And contruction worker really don't need to worry they will be out jobs if development stops: there is plenty of rebuilding to do. Now that the housing market is down, bet lots of people will be fixing their homes.
We should start referandums ALL OVER LI to stop development. Let the REITs and their bought-off politicians and town boards lose money, then maybe they'll leave!!
This is an island, with limited sustainable resources.
"Better, not Bigger" should be required reading for every pol who has any say over land use.

Its suspicious...is he saying that someone came to the site and let this species free? I think this has been the best news about another useless LI attraction that hopefully will not be built! As Nassau is now the 6th boro....Suffolk will follow soon as the 7th....lets keep some of the island the way it was suppose to be...rural! How many CVS's ,Home Depots, Starbucks, Malls and now this ccrap do we really need?

There has to be a multitude of ways to develop the site and no endanger owls or what ever, and not be ridiculus or an eyesore. I beleive the town of Riverhead need sto get some real help in looking at the crap they are proposing.

News that short-eared owls were spotted hunting in the grass near the old Grumman runways came as a surprise to Riverhead Town Supervisor Phil Cardinale. On Wednesday, he called the timing of the discovery "suspicious." -
A clear cut (no pun intended) case of "owl dumping" to sabotage a crucial addition to the "asphalt jungle" that used to called Long Island. "Suspicious?" Pleeeeeeze!
