If I was a Yahoo stock owner I would take the cash. The winds of open source are starting to blow and Microsoft knows this. That is why they are buying up companies that play up to that trend. Computers are getting cheaper and most applications are going to the web . Open source operating systems will interface very well to those web base applications and the applications are also open source. No one is going to pay three to four times the cost of the computer for an operating system when a free one will do the job better. No one will pay several hundred dollars for a office suit when the web base ones are free or much cheaper. Like IBM before it, Microsoft will have to reinvent itself to survive. There are better growth companys out there that are going with the trend to invest in. That is why I would take the cash.

I just read an article on BBC website and it explains the situation beautifully: Microsoft is trying to head Google off at the pass and are trying to use Yahoo to do it. Yahoo concentrated more on the content, cool graphics and lots of advertising (pop ups; etc). Google concentrated more on the actual search engines, tailoring their site more for the acutal users (you and me) than the big corporations and it's starting to pay off big time. Personally; I think that Bill Gates is the Anti-Christ of the computing world. Everything he puts out needs patches and/or updates to cover up their screw ups AND they charge out the wazoo. While Linux based systems (Apple, IBM and the military) are reliable and don't need that much upkeep while being affordable for everyone. The new Windows product's usually run into the hundred of $, while Linux Red Hat is only about $50 to $75 AND it includes all of the word processing; spreadsheet; etc programs that Windows charges you extra for. BBC put it perfectly; this is a shotgun wedding between Microsoft & Yahoo and Google is holding the gun.....

I thought Bill was retiring. I guess he doesn't want to retire until he can put another company out of business.

I've been using Yahoo for years and love it. I sometimes when I'm searching and don't find what I want I'll try google but usually get the exact same crap.

IMO Yahoo is worth more to me than I currently pay($0.00) Microsoft knows this and is just looking to come in and jack up the prices. Standard Merger/buyout practice. Yahoo is probably worth more than Yang is asking in terms of Brand alone, let alone customer base. Everyone hates MS. Only google hates yahoo.

Absolutely agree! Everyone hates MS - and Yahoo existed long before Google: better search results any day. Google is often full of garbage listings. I had a website back in 1993 and recall being one in around 25,000 listed in Yahoo, but there was no such thing as Google.
Not Linux based

Apple doesn't sell anything that's based on Linux. Their OS X operating system is based on BSD, not Linux.
