Unfortunately, you can get e. coli from contaminated produce, as well.

That is true, not just salmonella. My son got it from eating contaminated fruit when he was under 3 years of age. It was scary, but he recovered. |

Maybe we should all just starve to death since its not safe to eat veggies or meat.

I'd place the blame more on the food industry, cutting corners to make more $, not following all the rules.. As for the starving comment, this is why you HAVE to wash your fresh produce before consuming. It is imperative that you do. Or, you could always grow your own vegetables. E.coli is spread when something comes in contact with fecal matter (e.coli is a bacteria found in the digestive tract of animals, including humans). |

YES you can. If there are animals on the farm or nearby, and there are heavy rainstorms with lots of runoff, the vegetables CAN become contaminated with e.coli. All it takes is for that runoff to pass over animal feces. Do your research. |

http://recipes.howstuffworks.com/ecoli-spinac... So how do mammals' intestinal bacteria get into spinach? There are several possibilities, all of which involve cross-contamination -- the movement of bacteria from a contaminated surface to an uncontaminated one. Possible sources for E. coli contamination include: * People: When people are infected with E. coli O157:H7, they shed the bacteria in their waste. If an infected person picks spinach without washing his hands after using the restroom, bacteria can move from his hands to the spinach. * Animals: Animals can defecate in a field where the spinach is growing. Or, they can track waste from other areas into the field. * Runoff: Heavy rains can sweep fecal matter from farms where animals live to fields where spinach grows. * Food-processing equipment: Contaminated surfaces or machines in a food-processing plant can spread bacteria to lots of food very quickly. These possibilities exist for any fruit or vegetable, not just spinach. In the past few years, E. coli outbreaks have also been traced to bagged salads, sprouts, cantaloupe and apple cider. Get informed before you go around spreading mis-truths. |

Sorry, I thought you said it wasn't true. Guess I should check my eyes, lol.
