Be smart.
what's REALLY funny about your post is that Gmail READS YOUR E-MAIL that you send to track what you are interested in to put ads that might interest you on the page. now, i heard yesterday, they are going to start reading (oh, and storing by the way) the e-mails you RECEIVE for the same reason.

Kroger needs to stop focusing so much on loyalty cards, fuel points and digital coupons and take a look at price comparisons between its stores and some of its competitors. I can go to Meijer and Carnival and buy groceries for a lot less than Kroger charges, and I don't need a shopping card or any other gimmick to do so.

@Rob

We are members of Sam's club---
members have to pay an annual fee that could render your savings zero when you don't buy enough products. most products are not cheaper at Sam's club, but some of their quality is not bad.

ALDI is also not bad when it is about saving a buck here and there. The problem with ALDI is the hard work for the workers, I think it's kind of inhumane the way they have to work there. Furthermore it is a company from outside the country (Germany), with both ALDI-brothers being billionaires nowadays and letting their workers work like slaves.

Hiring privately police officers also does not come cheap. In the end the customers pay for these extra expenses.

You are right, the "loyalty" program should stop. I just wonder who else is analyzing the Kroger shopping behavior of consumers. I am pretty sure the NSA could have a say in it when they want to.

I think that theoretically every email-provider can read emails of their clients.

Another situation comes with smart-phones:
whenever your little chip (PINcard or whatever that thing is called) is defect you are forced to go to AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, whomever, and they can transfer your numbers and even can see your text messages you received and send. We needed to replace our chip already two times in two years, and last time the customer service employee told us that a specific person seems to like us pretty much since she calls a lot.

We are living in a world where the NSA an collect a lot of data about us and how we live, what we like, where we spend money, how often we sit in front of a computer, where we move, where we take our vacation, where we get gas, etc.. WE ARE able to be TRACKED with every step we do thanks to the comfort of technology.

Krogers should not be a part of it. When they really would want to be loyal to their customers they grant them freedom of privacy.

Also this: a customer does not have to be "loyal", a grocery store has to be loyal to the customers.

if you want to completely destroy your privacy and open yourself to all sorts of grief, by all means, go ahead. OR, what you COULD do is shop somewhere they dont have such high prices that a coupon is required to get the same price you could get somewhere else that doesn't collect all this personal data. like wal-mart, which accepts manufacture coupons and has lower prices that other's "sale" prices.
as an example...breyer's ice cream runs about $5.50 ON SALE at kroger or giant eagle. the EXACT SAME container at wal-mart is $2.75 every day. i happen to know that one because i love ice cream and i can never get over the price difference. another would be totino'sfrozen pizzas that run about $1.50 ON SALE at kroger and giant ealge and are $1.25 everyday at wal-mart.
another option is just to shop at sam's club or (my preference) costco. yes, they track you thru your membership but they still have prices that are better than anywhere else INCLUDING wal-mart. as an example, you can get a bottle of benadril (spelling??) or ibuprofin (??) and you will get about 10x the quantity for the SAME PRICE as you would elsewhere. costco even puts out coupons every month that allow you to save even more.(plus you can get a jumbo hot dog on a sub bun AND a foutain pop at both places for like $1.59) you don't save money shopping at kroger or giant eagle.(except when they put coke on sale...then sometimes it's a better deal there than anywhere else.)
Back in September I did an experient between Kroger and Wal-Fart. One week I went to Kroger and bought $84.76 in groceries - mostly store brand items and items with coupons. The next week I went to Wal-Fart and purchased the same items. If it was a Kroger store brand, I bought the Wal-Fart (Great Value) brand and I purchased the same items with identical coupons. My groceries at Wal-Fart came to $80.92. Total savings at Wal-Fart -$3.84. At Kroger I earned fuel points for four fill-ups in October. I usually always have a savings of at least 20 cents/gallon so on one 15 gallon fillup I saved $3.00. The end result was a savings of 84 cents at Wally World. I would have spent that in gas just getting to the nearest Walmart.

By the time you buy a Sam's Club membership you've already spent your savings. And since I live in Pickaway County, if I go to Sam's Club or Costco I've lost all of the savings in gas to drive to the other side of Franklin County. Sam's Club and Costco might save you money if you have a family to feed or you live close but the savings aren't there if you don't have a family or don't live in the neighbohood. Besides, I can go to GFS and buy quantity foods for the same prices that Sam's Club has listed on line and I really don't need a jumbo hot dog on a sub bun and a drink. If I do go grocery shopping somewhere else it's Meijer because it's closer than Wally World. To each his own.

I think I'll still go Krogering.

To those that provided an email address when they got their loyalty card and anyone that registered online to receive emails that include recalls, the weekly flyer, online specials, etc.

I have actually received quite a few emails from other companies. Kroger, Best Buy, Robert Half, and US Bank so far have warned me. They were all involved with the email distribution company "Epsilon".

US Bank quoted:
We have been informed by Epsilon Interactive, a vendor based in Dallas, Texas, that files containing your email address were accessed by unauthorized entry into their computer system. Epsilon helps us send you emails about products and services that may be of interest to you.
We want to assure you that U.S. Bank has never provided Epsilon with financial information about you. For your security, however, we wanted to call this matter to your attention. We ask that you remain alert to any unusual or suspicious emails.

Kroger's email was actually vague and didn't mention Epsilon:
Kroger wants you to know that the data base with our customers' names and email addresses has been breached by someone outside of the company. This data base contains the names and email addresses of customers who voluntarily provided their names and email addresses to Kroger. We want to assure you that the only information that was obtained was your name and email address. As a result, it is possible you may receive some spam email messages. We apologize for any inconvenience.

you can save your membership EASILY if you just buy all your gas there. i believe they do it the same way costco does...the raise their prices about 6 hours AFTER all the gas stations do. so if you are driving to work and see (like i did today) that gas went up 30 cents overnight, you can stop at sam's (or costco) and still get it at yesterday's price. i usually buy about 20 gallons a week, if i even save 10 cents a gallon that's $4x52 weeks is $208 savings (or more) on just gas. like i said though...i prefer costco. and the coupon book the put out every month REALLY saves you a lot of money.

i got bestbuy and chase today. remember, none of these companies will EVER ask you to verify personal info thru e-mail. make sure you warn your elderly parents and grandparents who might not be so tech smart. also, while you are at it, tell them about the "hey grandma, it's me." scam.(where the caller says that and waits for the elderly person to supply a name..."mikey? is that you?" then they say "yeah, it's me mikey. i'm in trouble and i need you to wire me some money." a lot of people are falling for that one since it's over the phone.

as i said, i like costco and i save a TON of money there. i saved $4.00 on my gas in a single fill up the other day. when i get my coupon book, i usually buy 1-3 items in it that saves me $1.50-$5.00 right there. i get a pack of 6 romain lettuce hearts for the same price of 4 at wal-mart (and kroger is much higher.) a big container of black berries is the same price as a small one (about 3x) in other stores. get a bigger discount on car rentals and hotel reservations than i qualify for with any other discount. a 1/2 sheet cake costs about 1/2 of what it does in other stores (and they are the BEST cakes you can get in a store). i bought 40 AA duracell batteries at costco for the same cost of 20 at wal-mart. they have 2 pounds of chedder or colby/jack for $4.99 and mozerella is $4.50 for 2 pounds. that's $2.25-$2.50 per pound. cheese at kroger runs about $6.00 a pound minimum. consumer reports rates many of costco's brands as number one. if you can't save money at costco,(and sam's is similar, just not as good in my opinion) you just aren't a very good shopper. and i'm single, so you don't need to be buying for a family. but...to each their own.

Daily Horoscope for June 4

Taurus

Get involved in financial transactions at your peril under today's Lunar Eclipse, because certain people will use them as a stick to beat you with. For instance, if you ask someone to lend you money they'll either make you feel guilty about it or dredge up all sorts of past instances when their trust was betrayed. You would also be well advised to avoid any show of possessiveness or jealousy, even if you feel it, unless you truly don't care about the disastrous outcome.
