The 'MythBusters' Take on the Mentos/Diet Coke Craze

I need help. I am giving a presentation in my college chemistry class and want to explain this chemical reaction but don't want to either dumb it down too much or take it over the non chem major's heads. Can you help?

I just did this experiment with a student of mine using (2) 2 liter bottles of Diet Coke and 7 each of mint mentos and fruit mentos. I only got 3 of the fruit mentos into the bottle before it started erupting. My associate was able to get 5 mint mentos into her bottle. We found that the fruit mentos starting erupting around the same time (maybe even earlier) as the mint but that the mint gave a stronger (higher) reaction.
