Computer-addiction (which can be expanded in a general sense be extended to addiction to any emerging technology) is not a new phenomenon.
Tracy Kidder's circa. 1981 book "The Soul Of A New Machine" is a tale about the obsessions of engineers designing Data General's new mini computer.
I experienced my own computer compulsions when installing an IBM 1800 computer in Haddam's Connecticut Yankee nuclear power plant in the mid-1960s.
