NHTSA Probes 1999-2003 GM Trucks for Possible Rusted Brake Lines

Oh my this is not good at all.

6.2 million vehicles affected and this is not as easy as replacing a gas pedal. This would costs thousands of dollars per vehicle to rectify.

Let's hope it isn't so!

WOW! We definitely couldn't see this coming. Let's add up the recalls in the last year:

6.2 mil for their trucks
1.3 mil for their cars (Cobalts and Buicks)

That's 7.5 million GM vehicles recalled within the last year!! Toyota move over. GM will be recall king by the end of the year!!

The biggest concern is the shear cost to replace the rusty brake lines.

It would be a massive undertaking in terms of parts, labor hours, facilities, and logistics.

This could bankrupt GM all over again.

There are reports on the web about Buick, Pontiac, and Olds sedans having this issue.

Was GM defrauded by a supplier?

And they're an automaker that can't afford to lose any money.

On a sidenote you can always tell when JJFADS has been on a thread even though he didn't write anything. He makes his mark by judging people that don't agree with him as clueless, nuts or spam. It makes him feel better about himself.

This is an even bigger issue than unintended acceleration.

The failure of the brake components is very concerning.

GM cannot afford to recall 6.2 million vehicles.

That it is. GM really needs to pick up its quality if it wants to compete successfully. 6.2 million probes into its quality doesn't set an example.

I will play the consumer advocate here and suggest that GM voluntarily call back the trucks and replace the brake lines with stainless steel versions that won't corrode.

GM owes it to its very owners (taxpayers) to correct this situation.

oh now.. they are supposed to be capitalizing on toyota's miss-fortune now.. not joining them.

Very true. I demand a recall and I want it now. haha...

It costs about $1000 to replace the brake lines on a vehicle per GM's service tech manual. This would put GM in a $6.2 BILLION bind.

I guess them loans aren't going to get paid back. Looks like the IPO will wait until GM can't figure this one out.

That's a lot of dough that GM doesn't have right now. IPO will be sometime next year if you ask me.

If this really costs GM $6.2 Billion like one expert predicted, it could be the end of GM as we know it.

Obama might have to seek congressional funding to keep the life support on.

The rust is scary.

The probe is widening, soon all GM vehicles will be under investigation.

GM didn't have enough nickel in the material.

Saw a GMC truck today with corroded brake lines. Owner blew out a rear line in the parking lot of the clubhouse. Swore he'd never buy a GM product again.

How do you put a price on losing a customer for life?

It received just two out of five power circles on J.D. Power's overall dependability rating.

The F-250 Lariat earned both the "worst value" and "worst safety performance" distinctions from Consumer Reports this year. It received an overall score of just 37 out of 100 points for predicted reliability, fuel economy, depreciation, ride, owner costs, accident avoidance, front-seat comfort, acceleration and owner satisfaction.

The spongey GM brake pedal is caused by the rust, it's not by design, but rather by specifying poor raw materials.
