I have no doubt that airlines need to spend more money and attention on aircraft maintenence, and I'm sure there could be more reliable government oversight as well, but I'm not sure why this is news. I've been on two commercial flights where an engine failed, and I don't think either of them made the national news. Unless all of them flame out, you land smoothly without incident.
