Some effects of Delta-NWA merger foreseeable

Even before Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines formally announced their merger plan in April, critics said small airports would be the first to lose service after the combination.

Many good points in this article. However, it's clear that Delta and Northwest are both preparing for the merger. Delta is pulling out of places like TOL and probably saving the signs so they can put them up on the ex-NW counters. There is no need for more than one (new) Delta operation at any airport. No rocket science there. So what if the (new) Delta station in TOL had one or two flights a day to ATL, CVG and DTW. That's the $100 million solution. Also, Comair is handling all UAL flights in (I think) 11 cities as well as DL. In some cases, they will also take over the old NW routes when the merger is done. In some cases that will mean that there are only a couple of groupes of people working at an airport. In this case - DL/UAL (with the old NW routes and AA. UAL handles US Air already and DL/NW handle Continental. So you will have DL/CO/US/NW and all their European partners'flights at one counter. The only way air travel will survive in the long run is to keep consolidating. Look at the long-haul bus companies for a preview. Kimo

one strong and profitable airline is better than 2 airline heading for bankruptcy even considering the service cuts

Kimo said, "So you will have DL/CO/US/NW and all their European partners' flights at one counter."
That reminds me of Aeroflot. If this is the result of a 10-15% cut I dread the 30% cut said to be coming. I see the "merger" giving one CEO a bigger pie to slice into bits and another CEO an early retirement. If DL and NW were so forward thinking concerning overcapacity, why didn't they hedge their fuel expenses like Southwest Airlines. Fuel, their number one expense and they did little if anything to position themselves. There's a lot of smoke and mirrors going on with this merger and excepting this article, not much investigative reporting being done in the Twin Cities.

To AMH2 Con: You might want to get your facts straight before voicing your opinion. Both NWA and Delta hedged fuel. I don't know where you got the idea that they didn't. Numerous articles in the past few days have addressed this issue.
What we will be getting with the merger is an airline who has employees who want to see their company survive. Dead weight went in Aug. of 2005.

Dead weight? Yeah right ! See this is why nwa's is so screwed up. People like you driving hatred towards other employees. I wish the best for all nwa employees, but you and your kind ! Delta would do well to sort you and your kind out. WAAH (*)

I just don't think you like much of anything. You are as guilty of everything you claim to dislike.

I dislike a malcontent calling Obama a Muslim on this board. If you were honest with yourself you would let Googs know that. But you would never criticize a fellow malcontent would you?

Obama was raised a muslim, was taught in a madrassa on how to be a muslim, and the fine art of pulling the "wool" or should I say pulling the keffiyah, over non muslim eyes. Better watch out for this viper!

The last time I checked Atlanta is at least in the US. Guess the employees will have to move on down there or move on out of NWA. The answer to you question with regard to the Minnesota politicians. They don't care that was obvious three years ago when they let NWA lockout the mechanics.

obama for prez! my wallet simply can't take another republican in the office. anyone who thinks obama is a muslim is simply paranoid.

msp is going to be a smaller hub for dl. but dl will pay the $ owed to minnesota.

the mechanics never had a chance....nw got rid of them, and never intended to bargain fairly. and, i agree w/ ecg, at least atlanta is in the us. just wait until dl does more outsourcing.

You asked if the government in Minnesota cared and I gave the natural truth. A big fat NO! Who doesn't like a little extra cheddar in their pockets? Move to Atlanta. That is where most of the job opportunities will be in the future.

I couldn't agree more. They will keep some jobs there, but a big chunk will come your direction. I don't care what name is on my paycheck as long as it is in the mail. I don't want another war mongering republican anywhere near the WH for years to come!

Now that's a pretty funny statement Sharon. I guess NW is greedy also and doesn't give a rats azz about Minnesota. Or did the mechanics do that too?
