A huge waste of money on Cablevision's part. They overpaid for a dying business in a dying industry. Cablevision and Newsday's footprints overlap. If either customer wanted the other's product, they would have had it already. Cablevision isn't in the city because Time Warner is there, so forget the amNY reader. I figured at least the Melville property is worth a good portion of the purchase, but it appears that Tribune keeps that. So no selling off the property for condos in the expensive Melville corridor. So what was the point of this? Hopefully, in a year, we won't see on our bill a "what were we thinking when we overpaid for this" surcharge. And for the CV shareholder's piece of mind, I hope that the 3% not bought means that CV/Newsday will still get the bulk paper purchase discount that Tribune likely has. That'd cut down on the bottom line without it. Oh, and Newsday's ads will become mostly Optimum free "house" ads. So...what was the point of this purchase again?

Not the first time big Jimmy played with other peoples' money to buy more toys. Remember the "Wiz"?

Murdoch's a smart man. So he'll let big Jimmy and his daddy buy Newsday, and you can bet it'll close before the decade is out, or within a few years of that at most.

If it wasn't for the fact that cable franchises enjoy monopoly-like protections other utility-tyoe companies no longer have, the Dolans would be little more than a bad memory for Long Island.

Bad for us. Will any reporting on any other Cablevision assets still be unbiased? Mr. Dolan is not Long Island but he is a big campaign contributor.

Cablesuction's reverse Midas touch will turn Newsday into a fish wrapper faster than you can say "The Wiz".

I may be one of the few people non-Newsday people who actually think this may be a big announcement. Check out my post

I have noted, including on here, that Newsday was positioning itself to be about entertainment rather than news. So, Newsday will fit nicely into Cablevision portfolio and we'll probably be seeing lots of News12 videos on Newsday.com .

But for real news, try the local papers such as Anton and Pennysaver.

I think that it may have been necessary 25 years ago to not have one perspective in a region, newswise. I think now, newspapers have an equal footing with Internet, as well as television/radio, news sources that simply didn't exist when newspapers were more importantly regarded.

The shareholders ARE NOT happy with this deal.

Cablevision paid far more than what Newsday is worth, and the shareholders will suffer. There is talk of a shareholder lawsuit to block the sale or at least 'fence off Newsday' from the rest of the company. This would prevent the Dolans from pouring more and more money into the failing newspaper business at shareholder expense.

Don't expect any local politicians to speak up since they take plenty of donatations from the Dolans.

if only Jimbo Dolan was in charge, I would totally agree. but Charles is a smart man.

now to unveil the Dolan master plan: Cablevision will make a lame attempt to revise newsday, probably led by old Jimbo, and it will fail utterly.

then they will close the paper and merge News12 with the idiotic Newsday web site, creating one platform for LI news and eliminating the costly and loser print publication.

not a bad idea.

I've always respected News12 and Newsday for reporting our local news. What is the slogan "As local as local news gets." I just don't see that changing because Charles Dolan has an interest in buying Newsday. In fact, since there are many news/radio/newspaper marriages already successfully in existance today, Mr. Dolan is simply joining the group of these news conglomerates. I look forward to seeing these two entities under one roof! Let's face it, the news is the news. The customers are the ones who either decide to buy a paper (mainly based on the front page stories), or not buy it. At the top of the news hour, News12 outlines the top stories. If you are interested, you keep watching, if not, you turn the channel. So, it is highly unlikely that the Dolan family can dictate what is in the news vs. not. We (the customers) decide if we want to continue buying the product, not them. The only gripe I ever had with Newsday is that in the last few years they changed the font of their news articles, making it very difficult to tell what is being reported as news vs. a paid advertisement. That is frustrating to me. But, if that's the worst thing that happens in a day, I think I can live with it.

Good luck to Newsday and Cablevision on this exciting venture. I think it will be a well-balanced union for many years to come.
