Hippy Hater you are so insensitive, don't you realize these are unfortunate victims of capitalism. Raised by a single, welfare moms, they are simply expressing themselves in a low carbon footprint manner, driven by their desire to help the environment. I know the warm and fuzzy feeling I got when I filed for my Social Security. Anticipating a office full old guys like me, I was shocked to see the place packed with these young, poor, dedicated, stewards of the land. Their preoccupation with preserving the forest has rendered them incapable of holding a job, feeding themselves, and practicing good hygiene. The drugs, don't these environmentalist soldiers need some simple pleasures in their daily struggle? You folks that pay the bills, you're so short sighted.

I have to agree with Divide By Zero. Bums are people, too. If we kick them out of the forest, where will they cook meth? If they had to stay in a forest far from the Arcata Plaza, where would they go to panhandle? Agressive panhandling by tweakers wandering around in a daze, yelling at nobody in particular and covered with feces is not something that only Eureka should have. These people need the forest and, I dare say, the forest needs them, too.

Hey guys,

People didn't feel safe , That is pure crap , People didn't want to see hippie kids smoking pot , so what. I did not like the trash and that part is what got the rangers in there and the people in an uproar.

If the homeless people and hippie kids would have been responsible and hiked out their trash and smoked out not in plain sight of the families and kids then all would have been good.

Responsibility that is the key word here , and these kids and older houseless people didn't have it plain and simple.

Bummer, I always looked forward to going to Redwood Park, smelling others weed, being asked for money, hearing the trash talk about how what poor shape our environment is in. These people are hypocrites. They talk about saving the environment while leaving their nasty trash behind. I was walking in Arcata yesterday (not sure why I went to that crap hole in the first place) and I passed a bus stop with a trash can right next to it. Not five feet from the trash can was a small bag of garbage. If these bums really want to help the environment, maybe the city should start paying them a dime a piece of garbage they collect so these bums can really help the environment. Of course, they would probably just spend the money earned on drugs or alcohol.

Josh I am a strong supporter of spending my money ABA, anywhere but Arcata.

Vote with your money and the city will eventually get the idea.

in america, we have more lazy kids then anywhere else i have traveled, and that is 24 countries...im afraid, that when the locals go to hang out in the park, its a sad memory, when they see all the hopeless and aimless kids, and do-nothings, trashing the area up...i would ticket them individually, and not allow them back on the property, but i would not "clear them out"..they are part of America's Personality, whether the tourists like it or not....we have created these groups of kids, who have no direction...an important step, would first be, to create a campground somehere....and there is LOTS of room.....created a campground, where all these kids and wandering type can stay, be safe, and keep the area clean....who cares about smoking herb in the forest..please fools, put your priorties together...therer is enuf murder and meaness in this country, to keep all the cops very busy.

i do also have a problem at times, as i dont like all the spare changers, in this country, whom hit you up constantly, although there is a job somewhere to make money...trust me...im 56 and i also wander.....i just do it in style..i have dignity...and that is the quality missing with many of these kids..if you can instill dignity in these people....maybe, just maybe...we can start to solve the bigger problem....what happened to the youth of america...and please, my little sheeple...dont go one dimensional on me, and say pot......an honest and informative discussion is what is needed, not "bum bashing"......

In the tradition of Ranger Bob, we Arcatans are happy to welcome Rangers Stonebarger and Miller to our parks, and will be happy to hear them approach vaguely hostile life forms with an upbeat, "Hi Folks! May I see your ID?"!

thes rangers have been doing the same routine for years, and it is NOT working.......it is a larger problem, and needs a brainstorming with all involved including the hopeless who are spending the most time there. I agree, that park is all of ours to use, not just "families"...we single people enjoy all the peace and quiet there also...again,let me repeat: there should be a campground somwhere in humboldt, for the people whom wander to sleep and eat, toilet etc....i have never understood, why this type of campground has not been developed yet, is it fear? is it Stupidity? Lets all work together, and create a safty net for these people, and you would have your park back the way you dream it to be.

It's great that they are taking the park back from the people that trash it, but I recently talked to a nice young lady who said she was walking her dog recently in the park off leash, and she was cited for breaking the leash law. No warning, just a citation. They fine was $267. Seems a bit harsh to not give a warning and then fine her $267 for not having her dog on a leash.

Yay! I use the arcata forest to train for hiking trips and I am extremely pleased with the new rangers. I've gone to the forest almost everyday for the last 4 years. I have seen the truck loads of trash they have to cart out from illegal camping on several occasions. Many people never walk in the back trails or anywhere off the main road where the bums live.

JTC as for a campground, there are about 6 within 15 to 20 miles. The bums flock here during the school year to feed off of students handing out their parents cash. The weekend after school ends the bum population drops off significantly. I have been homeless and lived in a tent and I never lived like some of the animals in the park. My training partner and I call them "the road kids" Most are not trying to better themselves just stopping through from festival to festival. Some are disabled and veterans but I have only met 2 or 3 out of hundreds of "travelers."

And thank god they are fining people for their dogs. You know how annoying it is when you are riding your bike and have them getting in the way. The ladies in the park should know better and abide by the rules like the rest of us.

The Cities of Eureka and Arcata both have leash laws.
In addition, when driving through both cities a dog in the back of a pick up truck MUST be tethered.

The big signs at the parking lots and on the trail heads stating animals must be on a leash, is the warning. Do you expect the ranger to personally read the rules to every visitor. If you run a stop sign do you get a warning before a ticket?

Truly amazing what Law Enforcement presence can do to when placed into areas frequented by the dubious crowd.

The sun finally shines. Folks are happy and present without fear. Life, generally is good! The area tends to flourish. Even the tomatoes taste better!

Wonder how that happens or why that is! NOw you know why we refer to the crud, Liberals, as the Dark Side.

Well now seems there are some people in Arcata that aren't from the extreme left. Heres a idea how bout we throw vagrants in jail like the law says we should maybe if we enforce these laws we make. We wouldn't have to keep making more and more. Like for panhandling which is vagrancy.

Thanks for your feedback, it is always nice to have an actual discussion here, instead of one line gun shots, i use them only in defense. i agree that most of the kids are not really trying to "land" so to speak, as of camping grounds, i have yet to here of any, but thats good news i quess. I have always supported a large Nomadic Campgrounds, with limited supervision, bathrooms etc....it should have been developed years ago, a shuttle bus could take everyone back in the evening......dogs on leash's....dog friendly parks.....i have no problem with the festival kids on the rode...as long as it remains respectful......again, how does one instill dignity into our fellw humans?....even a hobo can travel with class and dignity...afterall they are living the lifestyle of Freedom..

Bravo! This is long overdue. There is no reason why 50 or so people must dominate our fine public spaces, and prevent others from using them.
