Good story. I have many similar memories and stories that were passed down or shared with me.
I 100% agree that we need as a society to be more accountable and to regain our work ethic. I also agree that we should not act in fear.
It's like the story here says, spend it, but just earn it and pay for it. Todays world isn't always that patient, but its just good practice to earn what you spend and to pay your debts when you do have them.
Thanks.

My grannie handed me down Depression era quilts. They are among my most prized possessions. I agree, I like the message about work ethics.

We all need to read this book and realize there is hope. In the words (paraphrased)by President John F. Kennedy:
'There is no problem that man undertakes that is unsolveable. Every problem that exists was man-created. Therefore, it will take a man(or woman) to help solve it.'

I could almost smell my grandmother's pantry! Thanks for the stroll down memory lane, and much agreement on taking inventory in what we CAN do as well as changing our attitudes about credit.

I have studied the depression, Living before, during and after, the one thing was "American Pride" To live meant to work hard, be creative in thought and life, and they helped each other, This nation was a single unit trying to survive. Because of that strength in man, woman and child They did. We need to look at them for our examples, learn what they did. We need to learn how to WORK Put effort into a task and then finish it. Not Waite for someone else to finish it or fix it. The quick fix, 30 second answers just don't work they really never did. Thank you for bring your memories up so that we could all stop and think, find our memories and maybe answers to how to get back what we lost.

After 50 years of enjoying the Daily Times delivered each morning, I now enjoy it through modern technology. Todays editorial brought back a lot of memories. I had underwear made from those flour sacks, and all too well remember the lean pantry days. Your editorials are always on the mark in my opinion but I wish every american citizen could read todays. You said what we needed in language that could be understood. So many of our younger generations do not understand hard work. If you told them they would earn twenty-five cents an hour for their labor they would think you out of your mind. Hopefully we will never go back to that but we need to take our head out of the sand...NOW! I was excited to see the the editor and the Daily Times recently quoted in an article in the Corpus Christi Caller-times. Keep up the good work.

Excellent article Troy, I hear so many people with this opinion, but very seldom do I hear it from the Media.

fast food baby syndrome.
love it.
so true about having to pay our debt. it is a lesson we all must learn. if we buy it, we must earn it. too many of us pass up a thing called responsibility.
