"Authorities said the video showed workers kicking, shocking and otherwise abusing "downer" animals that were apparently too sick or injured to walk into the slaughterhouse. Some animals had water forced down their throats, San Bernardino County prosecutor Michael Ramos said."

Now we're 'waterboarding' our cattle.

How could anyone believe this is an isolated case and continue to eat beef after seeing these videos? I hope this investigation continues and uncovers abuses in the poultry and swine industries as well. Just remember the image of that cow being dragged with a forklift next time you are looking at steak in the grocery store, or ordering a hamburger in a drive-through.

Well, what about the image of the MexiPoop spinach and salad makings that have actually sickened and killed people? Next time you get a salad just think about that too.

You will note that the brand names under which this meat is sold are never mentioned. One might not want to do business with this company, but it will take some effort to find out if you are buying from the Westland/Hallmark Meat Co. The present label regulations permit producers to hide their identity.

After watching a documentary on "Mad Cow" 10 yrs ago, I gave up red meat. In the old days, you could eat a rare steak or hamburger because calves were grown on family farms, fed grain for marbling and put out on grass, then sent to the slaughter house. This meat was free of antibiotics, hormones, feed additives, flavor enhancers, age delaying gases, salt water solutions, mad cow disease and E-Coli. Now, we have industrialized, unnatural meat. Goodbye grass, hello feedlot! Beef is big business in the US and they won't tell you it's unsafe.

It's what's for dinner -- BEEF!

Let's see now, is this how that mantra goes: don't eat beef, don't eat pork, don't eat fowl, don't eat lamb, don't eat goat, don't eat fish, don't hunt and eat wild game, don't eat cheese, don't drink milk...just eat vegetables morning, noon and night. And just when you think you're done with all your leafy greens and roots, eat some more for dessert!

The facts I've read is that the e coli contaminates have come from animal feces.

It is always interesting to me how fast a hateful remark will end up on a thread. 3rd comment is not the record.

E-coli is found in both human and animal fecal matter.

It's horrible what's become of this industry. The abuse speaks for itself. I love meat but from now on I will only buy it from local sources that treat the livestock humanely. Yes, that means no more fast food,'sourceless beef' from the grocery stores, etc. And that means more expensive products (thus, less i can buy) but it'll be locally raised. I have already started buying my pork products from a small farm down in Denver NC, where i *know* the hogs are treated humanely while they're being raised up until the last second of their lives in the slaughter house. The products are far better tasting, to boot.

The fact is that if proper procedures are not followed, anything can be unsafe, including organic tofu. This is not a reason to argue against meat, it is a reason to become aware of safe processing techniques. And, a bunch of sick, unregulated, undocumented illegals as part of the food processing chain is probably dangerous enough to have as much an uproar, so munch some lettuce.

BROWNS AND OTHER SLAUGHTER HOUSES SHOULD BE CHECKED ALSO
IF THEY HAVE A DOWNED ANIMAL THEY TAKE A THERMOMETER TO CHECK THE TEMP AND IF ITS ABOVE NORMAL THEY PUT IT IN THE FOOD CHAIN ALSO

What gets to me most is the cruelty people are doing to animals, children, and to each other.May God in heaven have mercy on them. I am glad that I am not their judge.Pray for these people.

Especially pray for the ones that are cruel to children.

But 1st bible study class says -- a human is not an animal!

Then 1st Jr. High science class teaches evolution.

Then 1st high school argument is intellegent design vs evolution.

Then Scientology says humans are humans but came from outer space.

Then Mormon's say well maybe so because we all gonna get our own planet some day.

I lost my track, I was talking about someone saying humans are not animals...could be, we might just all be -- nuts!

The problem seems to be not only inhuman cruelty, but that it is brought on by the constant drive for more profit and lower prices. When a cow is fed and raised for slaughter and then cannot be put into the human food market it is a loss of income that drives the decision to dodge the rules and sell the meat to humans anyhow. All industries that are in competition face similar temptations. Our moral fiber has eroded to the point where when we face such decisions, many will fail to make the right choice.
