New twist surfaces in man's 1999 conviction

“Accordingly, the commonwealth would ask that an attorney be appointed to represent the defendant.”

Aquil K. Wiggins has spent nine years fighting what he says was a wrongful conviction in 1999 for a robbery and attempted carjacking outside a Hampton Food Lion. via Hampton Roads Daily Press

Watch out, Hampton's Commonwealth Attorney's Office is off the chain. Wasn't too long ago they were cited for witholding information is another local case. Ego maniacs with sights on the Attorney General's Office or a judgeship. Hope James E. Schleissmann and Linda Curtis have a big enough hole to crawl into after this case is resolved, they earned it. Last but not least, Curtis can't tell me that she is just discovering this new information, unless she is just plain stupid. She knew, and the crooked cops involved knew as well. What a set- up! SHAME ON YOU ALL!

He already had a criminal record. Who cares. It's karma. It was just a matter of time before he committed another crime.

If this guy was already a convicted felon, what was he doing working at West Communication? I wouldn't be calling in any orders and giving up my credit card info to that company.

This was done to throw a "bone" to the black community. This is a loser issue but is being used to gain favorable press and to make our boss, soon to be a Judge, more palatable to the public. She is in no way sympathetic to the needs of our community, just to her political ambitions.

We are all tired of being played.

It must be feel sorry for the poor felon week in Hampton. The man who was the robbery victim ID's this jerk. One of the women who thought he was 'attractive' forgot to notice(ha, ha) the robber's freckles, although she was close to the felon at the crime scene. Judge Taylor is black. Who's playing who? Just one more reason I'm glad I left the Peninsula. Keep chasing the working people, black and white, away by excusing criminals and their enablers. A few more years, and the Peninsula will look like Richmond--a criminal paradise surrounding a nice downtown that is empty of people after dark. Glad I'm gone.

It is one thing to hide behind an anonymous posting on-line to vent your views, but quite another to pretend to be part of an office to appear like you have some inside knowlege ... I am friends with several people in that office and there is no one staff or otherwise who is from Virginia Beach and I would bet my last dollar you could never be and have never been a Commonwealth's Attorney. Express your views but don't lie about who you are ..That's just sad...Grow up.

The man looks pretty innocent to me....especially as the majority of the evidence seems to be from witness identification through mug shots---mug shots especially the way this one was performed does nothing more than re-enforce the suspect the police wants you to choose. Any 1st year Psych class addresses this, and the faults of witness identification.

Seems the Keystone Cops investigated this case. Why did the original attorney not find this information, did the prosecution turn over all of this information? Why would the police show the victim two pictures in a photo line up of the same suspect?
Looks like this conviction is a bit tainted. I would suggest that all of the cases with this particular prosecutor be reviewed, god knows how many innocent men may be in jail for crimes they haven't committed.
I would check behind the lead investigator as well, anyone that would steer a witness and victim in a photo identification should not be in law enforcement.

There seems to be a lot of problems in the Hampton Judical System.

As a Black Man I would hate to have to be tried in Hampton with the racial climate as it may be here/I don't see there could be 12 unbiased individuals on a jury. But with the conduct of unprofessionalism displayed in a few cases in Hampton it is impossible to have an objective jury or prosecutor involved with proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

There appears to be two standards at the Hampton Court House.
