Obama to scrap funding for abstinence-only programs

Full story: www.guardian.co.uk

President Barack Obama faces a Republican backlash over his plan to scrap one of the most divisive policies left over from the Bush era: education programs for teenagers that promote only sexual abstinence.

The decision, which emerged last night when details of Obama's budget for next year were published, will see $138m a year redirected from abstinence-only programs to "evidence-based and promising teen pregnancy prevention programs."

Palin's kid shows we need more than "just say no". And one way to prevent teen abortion is to put some meat behind teen pregnancy prevention.

Those who want that 138 million back for abstinence-only programs should see if we can get that amount back from Iraq.

Yep, I agree with Obama on this one, big waste of money, ask Sarah P. But, it should be included as a birth control method in sex ed classes, right along with the STD issues. I think the churchs should pick that cause up and adopt if they want it taught more rigoursly.

Right.... how much money do you even need to tell people to "Say No" .... seriously....

If you NEED funding, to teach people how to "NO" ... then your obviously failing at your goal.

Saying "NO" is simple.... you just "SAY NO"

..... that is not sex education.
That is saying no to sex...

It's like drivers ed classes teaching people how to walk and run....

I agree...those who want an abstinence only program should find proponents of it willing and able to fund such a program. This would be a good job for the GOP and Christian right.

Just 'saying no' did not work for drugs and won't work for sex either.

I have to say that I agree with Obama on this one.... Parents aren't doing a good enough job teaching there kids what in the hell the REAL world is like... well let me rephrase that... MOST parents. Teenage pregnancy is very much out of hand and to many grandparents being parents again.

We want kids to be educated...properly...just saying no is not educating them...Republican backlash...bring it on...the republican party is out of touch and thanks to the last eight years, out of office...America is not as conservitive as the last administration wanted us painted...most people fall in the middle. That is why the time is ripe for a third party, a real party of moderates...

Obama's decision to abolish the federally-funded programmes reflects changing attitudes in the US to more positive positions on a whole host of social issues from abortion to gay marriage, once hot-button subjects for the conservative right.
Yup - that's right. The US attitudes are changed to POSITIVE POSITIONS!

Just say "Yes" to abortion. Say "Yes" to gay marriage! And say "YES" to teen sex!!!

If peoples' attitudes are changing, it's only because that crap is constantly being shoved at us daily via the media, the schools, and the government.

Say "YES" to PROTECTED sex, then the abortion issue is irrelevant. Unrealistically cry "Abstinence Only" and you're left with deciding between teen pregnancy or abortion. Palin's daughter could have ended up even worse, contracting something that could have killed her.

It's pathetic to blame "sex" on the media.

Sex has been going on since the beginning of time. So has gay sex, teen sex, and even abortions.

What the law should be focused on doing, is making and promoting safety.....

You can't stop sex. But you can promote safety so that people think about their actions and the repercussions of it before they do it, not after.

yes to abortion, unless you want to pay for the children being born who are unwanted and end up in a fate far worse then being born, like some foster care children do...yes to gay marriage because why should anyone care about who someone else marries and then of course you could always let them adopt those kids in foster care, they would be better off and people wouldn't have to abort.....teen sex...well it isn't a good idea unless you want to end up with std's, babies or maybe an abortion...I would caution against that one.

Ask Palin if she is the grandmother of a "bastard" child.

Censorship is evil. If you don't tell kids the WHOLE truth, they will seek out and learn only half-truths taught by unqualified people. So, yes, teach them about condoms, BCPs, day-after pills, abortion, rhythym method, withdrawal method, and abstinence. Also teach them the failure rates of each and the consequences of being a parent at age 13 or 14.

I am for comprehensive sex education, just telling teenagers to say "no" is not educating kids. Teens have sex and need to know how to prevent unwanted pregnancies. The GOP has tried just saying "no" to everthing for the last 3-months and it hasn't worked for them. Abstinence-only programs do not work, just ask Bristol Palin. What is needed is educating teens about all of the facts of having sex. Teens need the ability to make informed, intelligent decisions!
