Worst Stock for 2009: Blockbuster

Full story: Fool.com

When economists in years hence write the history books, I believe that they'll mark 2009 as the year Blockbuster went bust.

I agree with George. It seems to me they are actually doing quite well. I was just in a store two days ago and there was a continuous line the entire time I was there. The employees were very chipper and attentive even though they seemed a bit understaffed. Yet, the line moved surprisingly fast at checkout and I had a great experience. If other Blockbuster stores operate like the one I visited, I see a bright future for the company.
Good luck with that

Blockbuster is on the way out. Between the $1 Red Box, Netflix, and internet downloading sites, Blockbuster doesn't stand a chance. My wife and I used to be very loyal Blockbuster customers, as there was a store right down the street. When they started raising their prices every month and refusing to send us our movies, we decided to pull the plug. They ran the mom & pop video rental stores out of town and now a bigger fish coming to extend them the same courtesy. R.I.P. Blockbuster.

If it was right down the street, you should have kept renting from the store....

The problem with a box: It's a box. It doesn't have the product selection Blockbuster does, and now that Blockbuster is going to start renting games online too, what's not to like? Would you rather Blockbuster kept the low prices and went out of business. Do you honestly believe with no competition, Netflix is not going to raise prices too. Come on.

Blockbuster is about to roll out a nation-wide policy change that has brought a lot of customers back into the store that were using the Red Box, my market is currently testing it out and our revenue has shot through the roof especially during this "economic crisis".

oh yeah bring back last fees is really gonna help the company secure its customers? I predict a lot of lost business! Funny how the speculation is that BBI won't make it through the year, I say after this they won't make it half way through the year. I already know current employees that don't even use the store for their rental items they use netflix......what is that saying about this company? don't their employee rent for free? why would they pay another company to get something they could get for free??? answer-better company, better product, better service, less headache, and last but not least a company that isn't in trouble and has a strong business future. Blockbuster will tell you whatever you want to hear right now because the few of you in their store are all they have! Don't be fooled!

Funny how you are so fool~of yourself!! There is no downfall of BLOCKBUSTER! During these "hard economic" times why would one speculate loss of a business? In hopes that a successful company go down the waste side while others reap in glory as jobs would be lost? The doors are still open & we are still going strong!
Late fees are not coming back~might want to get your story straight! We secure our customers by providing excellent customer service and making our members feel welcomed.

Sorry you have had such a bad experience~but not all customers feel as you do~that is why we are branded the way we are.

If you call 4,000 plus stores still going strong a "few employees" are all "they have" keep your pants on and stop the speculation! Keep up with your predictions~that is all they are. You must work for NETFLIX~and have to say something bad about the competition. See you in the years to come!!

i have worked at blockbuster now for 8 years and i can tell yes there is a new national initiative coming that will drastically reduce the cost of a movie to customer almost 50 percent.. Customers will have a choice of how long they want the rental that will affect the cost and yes if they are late there will be a penalty/fee.. remember blockbuster is a company and has to make money so by slashing the cost of a rental in half and still carrying the same amount of movies in store late fees, do have to come back!! Blockbuster is struggiling just liek alot of companies out there maybe we will have to file for bankruptcy who knows!! We will come out of this stronger then ever just maybe not will all 400o store anymore maybe like 3000 or 2500!! We will survive period

Another employee chiming in.
The fact of the matter is that BBI still has $750 million in debt, little cash in the bank, and a negative margin. These things do not add up to long term viability.
I thank God daily that I have no debt and that my wife's position is secure.

This is going towards JACI's comments.....look in the mirror and tell me who the fool is? YOURSELF. You must be one of the mindless drones that work for BBI, because if you have done any research on your own or maybe even look around at where the market is going you would see Blockbuster really doesn't stand a chance, stock price's won't recover, people aren't just going to start coming back to the stores because they can give you the option of keeping the movies one, two or however many days you want. Why would I want to drive to Blockbuster deal with people like you and then have to drive back to return the movie, when i can just get almost any movie I want instantly through my x360 and netflixs? My "speculation" on the future of Blockbuster is just the way of the times and not speculation at all, times change, business needs change, and the demand for the Blockbuster Videos is less and less with each new development in how the world is watching their entertainment...Honestly its not just BBI its all video rental business.

Employees not taking advantage of their renting privileges?! I'd like to meet these morons. I worked at Blockbuster for a while. They get 5 free movies every week, including the ones that aren't out for another 2 weeks. You would have to be stupid not to take advantage of this. You also get a free game every week too. Blockbuster is an absolutely great place to work. As far as I know they are doing fine. And, if they aren't, then they are a very great employer. For most companies, the first thing to cut back on would be discount policies for the employees. I have seen this with a few other companies. Then they trim off the staffing requirements for the stores so they have less labor. As of right now, this company has not done any of this.

It is due to people like this that there will be no actual people to deal with personally when you have an issue. We will have to call some 800 number to talk with "Jim" from India. No wonder this economy sucks right now. Let's all congratulate people like this for their contribution...

The "no late fees" line is complete bull. BB has simply renamed them "retocking fees." Sure, you get a good amount of time but after less than a month the movie is autosold to the person, and bb won't take it back. We are constantly short handed, yet are constantly being criticized by corporate twits who haven't actually worked in a store. Stressful, lousy money, lousy everything. They can keep their free movies. I hope the company holds on for another 6 months or so while I find a real job, after that, I couldn't care less about them. Karma, blockbuster.

Daily Horoscope for December 10

Pisces

You should have a lucky break today when fate steps in and takes a hand. For instance, a situation may seem to be heading for disaster when you're suddenly bailed out in ways you would never have imagined. However, this doesn't mean you can take foolish risks in the hope that things will work out all right because there's no guaranteeing that they'll do so automatically.
