The idea that talking on cell phones while behind the wheel is generally accepted is a bunch of bull. Thats like saying drunk driving is generally accepted. The sooner this law is passed, AND ENFORCED,the better.

Looks like some people are going to find a job at AAM and increase their personal economy! They will be grateful and perhaps work in a team environment.

I propose we all go on strike to get better cell phones to drive with.

The young drivers seem to be more distracted using cell phones, probably due to their texting. However, I think a much more dangerous scenario are the drivers who can't talk to their passengers without turning to look at them as they speak, or the ones reading a book sitting on the steering wheel while driving. I'd much rather have someone talking on a phone, and looking in the direction they're driving, than someone who's eyes are looking elsewhere and cruising at 70 MPH!

aamworker wrote: <quoted text> Unions are just there to help ensure the working people have a voice in corporate America and are treated fairly by the corporate bosses. Unions have worked in the past and are effective when there is unity, but legislation and corporate manuverings have put unions at a disadvantage. When a publicly owned corporation is profitable the people that helped the company to succeed all deserve to be compensated fairly. Look at it this way it keeps the rich honest to a point and distributes the wealth of a PUBLIC corporation to benefit everyone involved and not only the corporate big wigs. The loss of power by the unions has caused a serious imbalance in this country where the rich are getting richer at the expense of US workers. When CEOs are paid 488 times more than their average workers compared to 42 times more in 1980, you know where the problem is with this economy. The only ones really thriving and making record profits are the CEOs of these companies, and they deserve to make their millions but not to the point that their greed is allowed to destroy our economy and the very people that made these CEOs wealthy. It is one thing for a company to cut wages but to give the jobs of US people away to third world countries just because they can and screw the American people that made them wealthy by buying their products is very wrong in my eyes. A policy(NAFTA) that makes US workers have to compete with China and Mexico for jobs paying $2-3hr is beneficial for whom exactly, other than the CEOs? This country isn't going to be any better off until these corporations are held accountable. It is just going to keep on being legalized extortion by the corporations on the working class of this country. Like I said unions are necessary and can be good if allowed to operate on a level playing field but legislative policies and greed have hurt the working class of America!! Yours is THE single most intelligent, well-stated, cogent arguement I've seen by ANY poster on any of these threads regarding the continuing value and necessity of American labor unions--and I happen to agree with it.

why ban hand held cells - It's not holding something in your hand that is distracting it is the conversation that takes your alertness off the road.

I agree with ya. Lower wages=less tax base. Products made out of the USA; bought back at high prices. Not too many "living wage jobs" left in USA any more. Who can afford to buy too much of anything anymore? CEO"S, "Oilmen" walking off with "bank" and the working man gets shafted. Wasn't for the men/women on the assembly lines and workers in the oil fields you can bet the "CEO"S and "Oilmen" would be slaughterd by their stock holders. Depression hits the USA again you can bet millionairs by the dozens will be killing themselves off like the last time. Their money will have no value. Working folks in America get no respect. The worse is yet to come. Mitzi wrote: I just came off a stint of
working in a auto parts factory thru a temp agency. No I wasn't a scab - it wasn't a shop on strike. It was hot, heavy lifting, stressful, dirty, extremely noisy, dangerous at times. Long hours - this particular companies policy was that they could work you for 19 days in a row then you could have two days off. Even if you knew that the job your doing could be done better management doesn't lisen because - hey what would you know your "just" a worker. Breaks were when you could get someone to relieve you on the line. I feel sorry for the guys that have been there for 20+ years. Yep, they make pretty good wages but they are so tied to making that much money that they can't hardley live otherwise. I understand why they buy lots of toys and such, it's to make up for the fact they don't have a life. My problem with the American Axle situation is not the money it's the fact that a company that is doing well wants more money. They can't charge the customer more with the ecomany the way it is and get away with it so they take back what they promised to the workers when they signed that contract. There soon will be no middle class. It will be upper class (CEOs , politicians ect) lower class - the folks that keep the whole system working by doing the production and the destitute. The American dream is no longer. Mitzi

Maybe, then they could get something done, and it would also employ more people, but that's NOT what the union is all about anymore. And we wonder why jobs are sent overseas?! I agree!!!

You people are truely idiots to think 7 and 8 dollars is enough to work in a shop with gas at 4.19 a gallon. May as well stay home and get food stamps since 1 out of every 10 people in the US is currently getting them anyway. Yes everyone but the elite 5% of america should work for min. wage. IDJETS
