People with iPhones have too much time on their hands.

They could be alot more productive if they focused on their work instead of punching away at their iPhone all day long.

That's a ridiculous generalization. Is this opinion based on your limited anecdotal experience or are you just completely making crap up to try to sound like you have a clue? I'm guessing the latter and that you've never used, seen or touched an iPhone.

Its true that I don't own a iPhone. I do have a lot of coworkers and friends that have them. Whenever they have a free moment, it always seems that they are tapping away at it for one reason or another. They could save a lot of time by just writing things down in a day-planner.

I believe one should be organized and stay networked/connected, but at the same time I think it affects the productivity of the American worker.

So, it's anecdotal evidence based on your slacker friends?

That makes sense. " ... tapping away at it for one reason or another."

Still too vague. If they are text messaging friends or playing games during work hours (free moment?) then they should be reprimanded or, if habitual, terminated.

Write in a day planner? Do you still write checks at the grocery store too?

For good or bad, the world is moving beyond handwritten notes. Check the stats of e-mail versus snail mail (or the rising cost of a stamp for that matter).

I don't use my iPhone at work. But when I update my calendar, notes, e-mails and contacts on my iMac at work, the data is automatically synced to my iPhone and MacBook Pro laptop so that I have the same, up-to-date information at home or when I'm traveling.

I have a coworker that uses his iPhone only for business calls during work hours (given that's just as anecdotal as your evidence).

" ... but at the same time I think it affects the productivity of the American worker."

I'm not buying it. If you're going to make a sweeping generalization, then back it up with sound data. Knowing a few people that do a certain behavior does not back up or justify a sweeping generalization about the productivity levels of millions and millions of working Americans. Not to mention that you've moved beyond the iPhone given its current estimated market numbers in the U.S.

P.S. I shouldn't say I've never used the iPhone at work. I've used the built-in camera for work purposes many times.

Recently, I needed to send information from a carton in the warehouse to a manufacturer's rep. Rather than jot down a whole lot of letters and numbers taking several minutes and risk getting them wrong, I snapped a photo of the box and e-mailed it. Nine clicks. Done. Which was a more productive use of time:
writing for several minutes and risking error or under 30 seconds to shoot and e-mail the exact same information originally provided by the manufacturer that was stamped on the box?

It's a trick question.

No. But I will call BS when anyone makes ridiculous, unsubstantiated, sweeping generalizations without a shred of logic or reasonable backing.

Do you understand the difference between anecdotal evidence and data from reliable sources of larger market groups? Condemning anything because of your own limited experience may sound convincing superficially but is actually mostly worthless.

Well, I am open to a survey be conducted of iPhones owners and putting forth the question as to how an iPhone makes them more productive in the workplace. I guess you would need a pretty large market group to get reliable results.

I doubt that Apple would fund such a survey since a finding that iPhones affect productivity may cause business owners to clamp down on iPhone use in the workplace. I think it would be similar to how companies began to clamp down on Internet use/misuse shortly after the Internet gained popularity in the mid 90s.

I wonder how many deserving people were moved down the liver transplant list so the billionaire could buy his way to the top of the list to get a transplant.

Interesting conspiracy theory. But to play devil's advocate, define deserving.

A survey of a product funded by the manufacturer is called an advertisement.

Duh. ;-)

I kind of agree with your statement. When everything slips off the grid due to the next Solar Flare the good o'l tab and pen will beat out all the gadgets that are out there. But how can we ever advance if we don't take baby steps? This G3 technology will just lead to bigger and better things. Or smaller things. I'm not ready for miniture computer just yet. I'm waiting for the glasses that make everything ginormous. That or the personal hologram devices.

Any interruption in cell phone transmissions for more than a few minutes would cause chaos.

The baby boomers will just sit there and stare at their cell phones/iPhones/Blackberries and wonder what they should do next.
The Generation X & Y people will play an old video game or go out shopping.
All the teenagers girls across America will be running through the streets screaming their heads off and pulling out their hair.
It will be pretty ugly.

This has happened where I live, ATT&T had a line cut causing All communications to go out in my town. Cell phones, Internet, Land Line Phones.
Our 911 was even out!
Did everyone panic no did it hurt those who rely on internet and communications yes. I being in the Information Technology i lost money due to no one could get a hold of me.
Did people die due to the phones were out probably not the earth will not end due to the lines are down for 12 hours.

Unless its like live free or die hard :)

A theory, but not necessarily a conspiracy theory. David Crosby leapfrogged over others to get a liver before others.
