Oh this is great for the economy and unemployment rate. Nice way to treat the employees that built this company not only the employees loosing their jobs now but the 400+ pilots already furloughed. Guess their loyalty and hard work means nothing. The era of employers rewarding dedicated employees obviously is over due to money. I hope Republic will do the right thing for all. The former Midwest CEO made off w/ his millions to leaving Republic to clean up his mess. Keep the faith.

If you read the news carefully the cuts are in back-office function like accounting and human resources, something that a company usually needs to control when they buy another. Also, the other people that are losing their jobs can easily transition to the same positions at Republic.
Midwest was never in Chapter 11, you're thinking about Frontier, which was forced into bankruptcy because of a 100% from a credit card transaction company.
For people that don't know what a 100% hold is, it means that the airline will only receive the money for the ticket when the passenger flies. So if a company is forced into a 100% hold, they probably would not receive money for atleast a month or more.

This has to be unsettling for Frontier. Too bad they didn't have the courage to swallow their pride and take the long-term view. Understandable that they wanted "anything but Southwest" given the fierce competition in Denver. They had reason to fight to hold on to their brand - they have a great product, and what's not to love with all those animals! But they are bankrupt, after all. And change is inevitable for them. This Republic deal simply bought them time. A deal with SWA would have guaranteed many more employees and thier families jobs into the future. Say what you may about SWA, it rates at the top for customer service, has the best management in the industry and is best positioned to weather continued recession. Good luck, Frontier...

Bye bye Midwest. When you trust a dumbass accountant who tells you the Republic and NWA deal is better offer than AirTrans is smoking crack. You have your chance for your airline and employee to better off but you throw it all away. RIP....

RWG I hope you still have a job and won't ever be faced w/ loosing everything you have worked for. Glitchrf-finish reading the article, on Aug 31, 90 pilots and flight attendants will be furloughed followed by more furloughs until November, when the last Midwest aircraft is gone. I can only pray the hardworking employees will be able to continue to support their families. Airtran is any better than the others? I think not.

You are completely wrong - Southwest bought Morris air several years ago, and didn't take the Morris employees, the also bought out the cometition of Muse Air and those employees were NOT absorb into SWA, so how is your company better - I don't fly SWA as they don't offer me the ease and convience of when they have to cancel a flight you can't endorse the ticket to another carrier like you can do with the legacy carriers right or wrong for a business traveler flying SWA isn't always the best option. But to sit out and point that it's a better company than Republic isn't the truth both companies are cut throat and would love to get rid of thier competition just as AA did with Braniff -

So let me get this straight. Frontier said no...mostly due to the pilots...who more than half of which have applications in at the people department. A few years ago after leaving my previous, BANKRUPT carrier for SWA, that I MADE the CHOICE to leave and to to, for a more stable work enviornment. I saw a very nice uniformed Frontier employee in the lobby of the old Omaha Sheraton layover hotel. I told her how nice she looked and that I had wanted to work for Frontier and pursued them but they did not seem to interested in me as a previous airline employee. She told me to "be glad you got on with a better company"! No joke...and I did. I love my job and working hard and doing what is RIGHT for the customer. I wish her and all of the employees at Frontier the best but the odds do not look good for ANY carrier out there right now.

But to sit out and point that it's a better company than Republic isn't the truth both companies are cut throat and would love to get rid of thier competition just as AA did with Braniff - I won't deny that this is business at the end of the day. Southwest employs almost 40,000 and I'm glad that they are as smart as they are since that number represents hundreds of thousands of individuals depending on paychecks. Management at both Morris and Muse initiated SWA's acquisition - no hostile takeover, in other words, and I can tell you that I have worked with many pilots and flight attendants who came from Morris (can't speak to Muse). There are plenty of airlines out there to meet the different needs of the flying public. Since being able to tranfer your ticket to another carrier is important to you, I'm glad you have choices to that end. As many folks happen to like the fact that they can change their tickets with no change fee. My son-in-law is a CFO of a company in Florida and travels bi-monthly from Colorado to work. He appreciates the flexibilty that we offer. I have no bone to pick with Republic. I'm sure they're nice folks, but I do wonder what lies ahead for Frontier with them. Midwest is already letting folks go with more to come most probably into the fall. I can only say that we enjoy an unusual sense of job security over here at SWA and I believe that the Frontier folks would have had a better shot for the long term with us. I'm not professing to be a prophet, however, so we'll all just have to wait and see how things play out for all the airlines. TOUGH TIMES, to be sure!

Andy; Lets talk about losing a job when an airline fails or goes chapter 11. Since 1997, I have worked for the following airlines, Gemini Air Cargo, Ryan International Airlines, Sunworld Airlines, DHL in CVG, Atlantic Coast Airlines, and last but not least Custom Air Transport ! I think I've forgotten more about failed airlines and losing all I have than you will ever know.

Insanity is sometimes defined as, "Doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result." That's 6 jobs in 12 years! Your situation speaks more towards your failure to make solid employment choices than it does towards the failures of the airlines you have chosen to work for.

By next year time, this will the second time DENVER will loose another airline name Frontier. Many of the Frontier employees who voted for that dumb shit Osama voted for Republic. Well, the employees will have one year time to update their resume before they loose their jobs. These dumbass did not release what they did to Midwest will soon happen to them by replacing crappy regional jets onto Midwest MD80/B717 routes. SEEYA...

Actually the news is only reporting what the corporate offices of the airline are telling them. The cuts are actually coming from the employees that work the tarmac and load people's baggage and ensure that their luggage makes it where it needs to go when they have a connecting flight. Less employees = worse experience for travelers.
