This, from a company that, in a former incarnation as Value Jet, dropped one into the Everglades years ago.

My how things change.

Change your airline name and your safety history goes away.

I don't think so!

I sincerely hope Mary Lou's comment was a joke. I work for Delta also and that has to be 1 of the stupidest responses I've ever heard. Air Tran has recovered remarkably well from the Value Jet days. They kicked Delta's butt in Atlanta over the years with cheap fares and reliable service. Probably the biggest reason Delta went into bankruptcy was Air Tran eroding their fares. If you're serious Mary Lou, go back to picking cotton for a living. You really are clueless

The Valujet incident over the everglades was when a FEMALE was in command of the aircraft. She did not listen to the FAs panicing over the floorboard is melting away and soft. She took over 15 minutes for stupid checklist and the aircraft nose did not even point to an airport for an emergency/fire.

Engine failure is not as bad as any fire.

Wikipedia has a comprehensive account of the crash of ValuJet Flight 592 on May 11, 1996:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ValuJet_Flight_5...

Also, there's "The Lessons of ValuJet 592" in the March 1998 issue of The Atlantic:

http://theatlantic.com/past/docs/issues/98mar...

Yes, Flight 592's pilot was a woman, Captain Candalyn Kubeck. She was a good pilot, with nearly 9,000 flying hours logged, and some 2,100 hours logged in the DC-9. She was comparatively low paid, like everyone at ValuJet.

Pilots have always told any emergency arrises, ask declare emergency and divert to nearest airport immediately. If she's PF, she should of delegated her authority for emergency checklist to PNF and have the nose of the aircraft point to FLL, PBI, Hollwood Airport or even Sarasota or Fort Naples.

Guess that no one learned the lesson and also lead to Alaska Air MD83 to go down over the pacific ocean while passing LAX, SNA, LGB, SBA, OXR, BUR, and Camarillo over 30 minutes to fixed the problem.

You get what you paid for.

When delta starts to treat ALL it's employees equally and stop using the union as a scapegoat to maximize profits at the expense of it's loyal hard working employees from NWA, then maybe people will believe Delta's "family" culture. Right Now it's a two class society performing exactly the same job!

As for the comment "go back to picking cotton"
It's reminds me of why I hate the south!

Hey, Junior... before being critical of a dead airline Captain, I suggest you get your facts straight about the accident.

And remember, you can thank her for her service in the U.S. Air Force... defending the right to freedom of speech with which you criticize her.

So your one of those nutjobs with the freedom of speech bullsh*t. She's NOT the only american serving the pampered air farce. Many of us served in the Vietnam war and Grenada are the REAL MILITARY airman, not some pampered airman serving from a desk job.

Chemical Oxygen Generators incorrectly labeled in Cargo partially due to OUTSOURCING from what I recall.

Yep OUTSOURCING hurts no one. Tell that to the relatives of those lost on ValueJet

My AirTran flight from Atlanta to White Plains, NY, blew one of its two engines (flight 661 on 2/28/11, a 717 with about 100 people on board). There was a loud bang, a white flash (I was sitting in the row in front of the wing and saw it), and a scary whining sound; the plane veered slightly and immediately descended. We we diverted to Philadelphia, landing after about 30 frightening minutes in the air. I have heard absolutely nothing about this in the news, and I want people to know. The pilot did a good job of landing the plane, but I will never feel safe on AirTran again.

My wife and I were also on that AirTran flight 661 on the evening of 2/28.
The flight crew did a fantastic job of keeping things calm. It was a long 30 minutes to touchdown..........it was a scary moment.....but could have been worse.
I have much respect for the pilots and crews of these aged aircraft.
