Judged: 1 There are over 100 people that bike to my office building during spring/summer/fall, and 10-20 that bike in winter. We have bike parking facilities which makes it more secure. |

Bike riders should have to PAY to park/store too. Two bikes to a parking place, 1/2 price for each vs. a automobile full price. Why should MY tax money pay for THEIR free parking and I have to pay FULL price because I'm too old to ride a bicycle to work?(and it's not safe for anyone to ride in the streets nor the bikes providing another problem for auto drivers.)

Judged: 1 It's perfectly safe to ride a bike in the street. It's the passing vehicles legal responsibility to pass safely and assure a clear distance. |

Judged: 2 1 Considering bike fatalities vs. car fatalities over the last year, cycling seems to be the safer bet. AT least once a week I see a serious injury or fatality accident on the freeway. I can count on my hand the number of bike deaths in the last year. |

So tax dollars are going to help people who are ALREADY biking to Columbus to jobs they ALREADY have? Hmm, I guess according to this administration's method of counting, that would be 2 jobs created or saved per cyclist, right?
This is insulting. No offense to any cyclists out their, but if you're biking to WORK, then you have a job to go to--the "stimulous" was supposed to CREATE JOBS--presumably for people who have lost theirs. |

Oh come on. I suppose next you're going to say there are the exact same number of bikes using the roadways everyday as motor vehicles?(P/S, perhaps you haven't heard, but bicycles are not permitted on freeways.) |

$490,000 is a little, teeny, weeny tidbit of funding relative to the gargantuan funding the automobile transportation receives every year. Folks, have you noticed, Americans are fat and are dying of fat-related illnesses. If people would ride bikes instead of driving everywhere, the national health care debate would not be so pressing. If providing secure parking for a relative pitance of 490K encourages people to get out of their exhaust-spewing cars what are you people complaining about????

Carpe diem. I think you have hit on a sticking point in the debate. Will the dedicated parking increase the number of people bicycling downtown or just serve the existing population?
Will available parking change the adversarial climate between cyclists and motorists that is fed by each side believing that its right to the roadway is paramount? Probably not. Personally, I like the idea but then I've lately become a road cyclist and enjoyed "Ride Columbus" last year. Still I won't soon be riding downtown on any kind of regular basis as getting from the suburb where I live has few safe routes and getting from where I work (in the City) has NO safe routes. So I'm stuck using my car inside the "beltway" except on group rides for recreation and fitness. In the scheme of things $490K is a "teeny, weeny tidbit of funding" but to an individual working to get by - it is anything but! |

Why don't you call the owner of the garage and find out, or are you one of those people who owns a motorcycle and loves to pretend he's persecuted for it? |

tipusnr, thanks for the considered response. From reading the article, its clear a purpose of the funding is to serve the increasing number of bike commuters to provide secure lock up, etc.
I agree, 490K is a huge sum to most people. However, those who bellyache about spending a dime for transportation other than the sacred automobile need to get a little perspective. |
