Really? Obama started the wildfires and the H1N1 virus? Who knew he was so powerful? And I suppose W had nothing to do with the wars and recession. Get a clue.
Not only that' Obama's a god-damned communist like his buddy, Van Jones.

Anytime you are listening to a politician, it is a political event.
It isn't the political speech so much as the 'supporting class assignment' such as essays on 'How I can help President Obama' that are objectional.
P.S. G.H.W. Bush's speeches were criticized too by many Republicans.

So moving here and getting indoctrinated into the Buckeye Nation is okay. Taking time out of school for Fair day is okay. But allowing kids to thoughtfully listen to the democratically elected leader of the US is not? And the lesson plan questions are just like those of a book club. They are for guiding discussion. Something we have apparently forgotten how to do. I will tape it for my kids and we will watch it together and they will form their own opinion. I've raised them to be thoughtful and question authority. They want to stay home that day and watch it live. Pretty ironic that they "stay in school" message will only be heard out of school that day in our public school system.

You Ohio IDIOTS!!!! What the hell is wrong with you people? You have a president telling your kids to stay in school and try to be a success in life and you don't want them to hear that??? I bet if it were a stupid Buckeyes game you would expect school to be canceled so the kids could watch that huh?
You are dead-on. I lived in C-bus for 10 years and the first, and most important topic on the nightly news was the Buckeyes. I had to go to the internet to find out what is going on in the world. So sad.

This article left out the main reason most parents object, and why they believe it is political indoctrination--the optional preparatory materials from the U.S. Department of Education that ask students to write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president. That sounds like something that would happen in Cuba.
what are you talking about? Giving back to your community and country is something we have encouraged for years. Getting an education, joining the military, being an active citizen. Isn't that what the rallies and tea parties are all about? Is it only okay to speak out if your a conservative and if your a liberal your a communist? Sending thousands of young soldiers to Iraq to die based on lies was patriotic but talking to children about the importance of a good education and then asking them to write a letter to themselves committing to being better citizens that is communist. You make no sense. Stop being bitter, Obama won the election fair and square (not like Bush in 2000), now let him be President!

Barrack is most likely a communist like his friend Van Jones. After hearing what Van Jones and Obama are up to, how could you possibly take a chance on letting your children to be influenced by these traitorous, racist, hate mongering, Mis-creants? Nobody is THAT dumb.

You said (on an earlier post, and on a different subject) you look for content. I watched the video. Twice people (one at one time, several at another) that they pledge to be a servant to either Barack Obama or "our President". I would say if that's what these people want to do, that is their right, crazy as it might be. I did not see where they were telling children to pledge to be a servant to Obama. What I got out of it, is make your own pledge. I think perhaps you have an overheated imagination. I don't see a lot of difference between this and George the First's Thousand Points of Light campaign.

Americans might prefer thier children be exposed to positive role models, not the socialist ramblings of a product of the Chicago political machine.

Perhaps in some speach to adults Obama might point out that the Constitution must be ammended to make federal control of healthcare legal. All powers not designated in the Constitution are reserved to the states, or to the people themselves. There is no reference to heathcare in the Constitution.

Why expose your children to socialist indoctrination? Better to keep them out of school that day, and every other day not focused on education.

Isn't it possible that both sides may have something good to say? Have we really become so paranoid that we are afraid to allow our children to hear something positive about education? It seems that anything can be used in this partisan war of words that exists today. The only difficulty is, in all of our splendid isolation as Republicans and Democrats or liberals and conservatives, we may very well be losing the war by winning the battle. The atmosphere that has developed over the last 20 or so years is frightening to say the least. There is now no longer a willingness to even listen to the other side. I find myself choosing sides simply because of attitudes on one or the other. And then I remind myself that I must listen to all sides, find the facts, check the figures and statements against reality and then make up my mind. Any other approach may result in missing something really worthwhile.

Make a choice to not join the anger and paranoia. Make a choice to be reasonable. Make a choice to make intelligent decisions, not emotional ones.

This is the president of the U.S. The last time I checked, he won a majority of both the popular and electoral votes. Whether or not I voted for him, he is my president and to deny my children the right to hear him is to underestimate their ability to reason and think for themselves. I really don't want intellectual and political clones of myself. I choose instead to give them the roots, to teach them my beliefs and to allow them to see through the world through their eyes, not mine.

Penn's Response:

Penn's response was one of the most disjointed I have seen. Was the man drunk? He could have said what he wanted to say in about 60 seconds. And I'm not dissing what he said. He's got a right to his opinion. But anyway...this is supposed to be a country where you are free to do what you want, as long as you don't infringe on others. So if people want to be a servant to Barack Obama, or "our President", or God (which MILLIONS of people do), or Captain Kirk, or U2, or who/whatever, I'm not going to stop them. I think they are all nuts, but they probably think some of the stuff I do is nuts. I'm not a servant to anyone. So if some school kids see this and say "Mom and Dad, I'm gonna be a servant to Obama", that's where they need to step in and fix the situation. But I think most intelligent kids are gonna say "Ok, if these goofballs wanna be servants to Obama, more power to 'em, but it's not for me". And by the way, a high level staffer for GWB made it mandatory for prospective Justice Department attorneys to pledge to serve the person of George W. Bush. That's a fact, jack.

Why don't they just release a transcript of the speech early? If parents are still upset about it they can keep their kids home that day. Seems like a reasonable compromise.
I really think they'd find they have nothing to worry about. Obama is just gonna talk about the importance of staying in school and pursuing an education. What parent would oppose that message?
The White House has said they will release a transcript in advance so everyone may read it and then make an intelligent decision. Please take the chance to think, people.
