Full story: Columbus Dispatch

Cheering messages of limited government, lower taxes and states' rights, thousands rallied yesterday at the Statehouse, hoping to continue a movement that began in the spring with nationwide tea parties.

Where were all of these people at during the Bush Administration? Did it take them all of eight years to figure out that our economy was in trouble? This movement to stop taxation is confusing to me because theses same group want the services that government provides.

When I read statements like I want to drive my gas guzzler. I have to question if these individuals give any consideration to the evidence that our national sense of greed and lack of concern for the planet is a problem. One that is creating health problems for future generations of Americans. More urban children are being diagnosed with asthma than ever before. One of the causes being attributed to this health problem is air quality and pollution.

States Rights is one of those terms that makes me feel real uncomfortable. Because it ususally ends up being the rights of a few versus the rights of the entire population. It also comes across as code language for an agenda that includes suppression of people of color. Yes, I did say this. In their zeal to defend America this movement is coming across as an anti everyone else except them statement. This is not the America we should want to see emerging in this decade.

US has an expense problem not a revenue problem. Unless the spending stops this country will look like Argentina. Climate has improved under Bush, check your facts. Urban children have bigger problem with obesity than asthma.
As for people of color; it's the Republicans (from Lincoln on down) that have done more for people of color. Those Southern Governors .

They might have been asleep for the last 8 years, but when you triple the national debt in 6 months with political handouts, calling it stimulus, it tends to wake people up. Many people are tired of the federal government overstepping its Constitutional bounds. We are tired of the polititions picking and choosing which laws to obey and enforce and which to ignore. This practice goes on both sides of the aisle and needs to stop. There is no place in the Constitution that says the Federal government should provide health insurance to the citizens, it is not a right. Furthermore, it is offensive to think that they are contimplating REQUIRING people to purchase health insurance even if they don't want it.

Laws are made by the people, for the people...the problems this country is facing did not start with the Bush administration, they started with us...sitting in the comfort of our home, selfishly only thinking of ourselves and our wants. We opened the door for the wolves to come into the henhouse due to our apathy. Well, the time as come when all of us need to get up out of our recliners and stand up for the prinicipals this country was founded on.

It is also time for the media to impart news on a impartial basis...where was all of the media for this tremendous event!! The media also needs to be held accountable.

I would suggest that we not only contact our representatives in Congress, federal and state, but we also contact media sources and voice our displeasure over the covering of what is really news.

People are against big government...it has been going on for a very long time, it is just that the current administration is turning so fast towards Socialism/Communism that people are finally waking up. It is OUR FAULT for sitting idle for so long. Research each and every Czar (is this Russia??) that Obama has appointed. Many lean Communist or Marxist. Just because this current president happens to be black does not mean it is a racist issue. It happens to be that we all have a problem with HIS issues. I take great offense that you think this is racial. Just by your shear mention of it...YOU are being racial.

I have little doubt that the people (or interests) promoting these events are hard-core-right Republican partisans with an agenda of taking back control of the federal government.

The day Bush took office, the official debt was 6 trilion. The day he left it approached 13 trilliion, and the annual surplus he inherited had turned to a projected 2009 deficit of over $1 trillion for that year alone. The GOP controlled the House for six of those years and the Senate for four.(Where were you then, John Boehner?) The unfunded war in Iraq accounts for less than one third of that Republican debt spree. Reckless and unnecessary tax cuts for the rich contributed trillions to that new debt burden. As Nobel Economist George Akerlof said of the GOP tax cuts for the rich -- tax cuts that conveniently don't expire until a time after Bush left office -- "What we have here is a form of looting." Republicans paid for favors to the rich by borrowing from our collective future.

We're now in an economic crisis and this is not the time to slam the brakes on spending. But we do need to deal with our long term problems. Our long-term fiscal problems involve massive ($40 trillion-plus) shortfalls in funding for medical care for seniors (Medicare), Social Security, as well as other medical and retirement pension obligations, including benefits for the military and government employees.

Any real expert will tell you that we will need substantially more revenues over time. We also must reduce the cost of health care in this country. We pay more than doublle what other leading nations pay for health care per capita, and our overall health outcomes are nowhere near the world's best. Inflated costs and profits are a 900 pound gorillla that threatens our children. Were Eisenhower alive today, he'd be warning "Beware the Health Care Industrial Complex" along with his caution about the military.

At a time when we need statesmen, Republican leader John Boehner gives us shameless lies about how the Democrats want to euthanize your grandmother. Maybe the Liberty folks should do an anti-Boehner rally. But I wont hold my breath.

"Now that Obama is in office, all of the Republicans oppose the bailouts," he said. "They are born-again fiscal conservatives. That's convenient."

Mr. Rink conveniently forgets that Democrats won both Houses in the Congress at least partially due to Conservative disgust with the Bush Administrations lack of fiscal conservatism. He also conveniently forgets the massive Conservative protest against Bush's lame duck bailouts.

I'd like to take this chance to remind him of these facts. I'd also like to point out that quadrupling Bush's deficits is NOT why independents and frustrated Conservatives helped elect Obama in the first place.

I somehow doubt that Mr. Rink needs to be reminded of these things, I think instead that he fully realizes how disingenuous his statement is.

A fair question. It wasn't until the 2008 campaign that I learned that Bush had tried more than once to rein in the mortgage securities problems, but the Republican congress critters were no more interested than the Democrats. So lesson learned.
The Democrat segregationists gave states rights a bad name, but that doesn't mean they are irrelevant. With the networking available now through the internet, Twitter, etc, a decentralized model of governance is practical and more fair. At present we have massive corruption through earmarks fueled by irresponsible elitist congresspersons with access to a huge pot of money. Would not California be much better off if all the money that's hoovered up to Imperial Washington stayed in the state?
Technology will deliver energy solutions, and soon, but if it weren't for the ridiculous drilling bans there would be plenty of gas to guzzle.

What you ignore is that Bush, who inherited a surplus for 2001, left Obama with the first projected trillion dollar deficit and the worst economic crisis in decades. Failure to boost the economy this year would have risked another Depression, but taking action meant compounding the huge deficits left behind by reckless GOP leaders. And when the tax cuts expire in 2011, I guarantee Dems will be blamed by the right for the "tax increase."

They were here. There was a substantial movement called "Porkbusters" that was gaining momentum. And a lot of "hard core right wingers" were very unhappy with Bush's big government approach.
The movement that's brewing now is NOT Repub vs Dem, it's elite statist vs libertarian. It's an anger against an elite ruling class and its cronies taking increasing control over our lives. Both Repubs and Dems are guilty and we need to throw them ALL out.

Well, buddy, you couldn't be more wrong. Take, for example, this report from the Columbus Dispatch:

"Cheering messages of limited government, lower taxes and states' rights, thousands rallied yesterday at the Statehouse, hoping to continue a movement that began in the spring with nationwide tea parties. "

Or the formal name of the Columbus protest:

"Ohio State Sovereignty Tea Party"

States all over the country are passing state sovereignty laws, the object of which is to rein in the overreach of the federal government. The tea parties are avoiding being linked with political parties and politicians.

Anyone who wants increased government spending in a business downturn has drunk the New Deal kool-aid. The problem is a lack of capital. Cutting the corporate income tax and capital gains tax would immediately free up large sums of capital. The Democrats' Porkulus is targeted at pumping money into selected congressional districts for 2010, that's why so very little of the money has been committed so far. Wake up and research the actual effects of the New Deal. Here is a link which explores the various factors in the causes and cure of the Great Depression:

Daily Horoscope for February 12

Virgo

Before the day's even fully underway, you could be drawn to an item in a shop which proves irresistible. Of course, there could be other wonderful items in other shops.... but can you afford to grin and keep shopping? If you don't exercise some control, tomorrow you're going to wonder what on earth happened. You don't need a lawnmower if you live in an apartment, or four hundred disposable nappies if you don't have a baby! Get the point?
