The grants came from the feds on the ticket taxes paid. The feds collect it then dole it back out.

It pays for most of it, but not all. It is still subsidized. If you don't believe me take a look at the most recent financial report for the Columbus Port Authority. In addition to the user fees, they received $26.5 million in government grants in 2007 and $17.9 million in grants in 2008:

No, that's not quite rite. Remember, I said those were *in addition to* the user fees. The 26.5 million and 17.9 million were combinations of state/local/federal grants that were not part of the user fees paid by users of the airport. In the scope of a $5 Billion annual budget it's small, but it's there.

Yeah, this is because countries like Japan, France, and Germany combined pratically fit into 1 of our larger states. High density populations situated closely together ... rail might make sense. I let you guys take the train from Chicago to Denver, myself I prefer the 3 hour flight.
Density of population and geography, two excellent points.

This will not work in the United States. Closest it comes to working is in our largest cities and in Northeast Corridor, but takes very heavy government subsidy, as I'm sure the European systems do.

And, let's fact it, there's the cultural factor too.

You think Mrs. Boogie is going to get on some train car containing loud young punks, some probably packing?

Nooooo way.

We were on the train in Boston and the juvenile delinquents were carving up the seats with their knives just ahead of us.

Nooooo thank you.

Haha, I can't remember if I ever rode the EL in Chicago without some guy trying to sell me gold chains.

keep in mind, Japan doesn't have the crime we have here.

I know people that live there and more people that have lived there. the biggest worry on a Japanese train is being felt up by someone not being shot or stabbed by some ghetto trash that wants to rape or rob you.

Another cultural difference that makes a much stronger case for these trains in Japan.
Around here you'd have to tolerate the feel-ups, purse snatchings AND someone packing ready to rob you.

No thanks, I'll drive.
