Two days I witnessed what could have been the next bicycle fatality. I was driving east on Trabue where it merges into one lane and was passed at high speed on the right by some tool in a SUV with out of state plates (in heavy rain). A few seconds after he zoomed by, I passed an older gentleman on a bike headed in the opposite direction with a rather disconcerted expression on his face. A few feet either way and who knows what would have happened to him.

That picture is too small to judge properly. And given the apparent width of the road, if I was riding that stretch of roadway I would probably take the lane. Too narrow for car and bike to share.

In regards to "Concrete's" posting. Steven was riding legally when he was hit by the car. Even if the bicyclists were trying more than three abreast, that is not why the car passed illegally. The driver was in a hurry and no bicycle person was going to slow them down. This person would pass a fire truck or ambulance if he/she felt it was going too slow. This driver drove into coming traffic and almost caused a head on collusion if the other cars did not stop. Please look out for each other.
Thank you Dispatch for covering the ride for Steven.

It's not a funeral procession (or cortege.) They were biking to visiting hours. Looks like a bit of a protest to me. Why else would the Dispatch know about it?

Something interesting in all of this is: Gabe Spiegel, the news anchor for WTTE and ABC was also in the vehicle that hit the cyclist. I wonder why the news media hasn't jumped all over that? Perhaps it's because he's one of their own?

Of course... And guess what, when Michael Vick is reinstated to the NFL, we'll hear all sorts of people saying that Vick should be banned for life because what he did was terrible.

But, Gabe will get a pass on getting drunk and allowing his friend to kill someone.

Did the bikers have a police escort? That would have been sensible for the amount of bikes -- but, irregardless, the car was still passing in a no pass zone!

As for Gabe Speigel being the passenger --- and being a news person -- that is just it -- he was the passenger -- apparently his friend he was riding with was the idiot behind the wheel!!!

Dear Concrete, my name is Brent. If you'd like to risk killing me by passing to close, you should at least be man enough to know my name.

A single cyclist has the right of way to the ENTIRE LANE.

Section 45 Chapter 4511.55 (C)
This section does not require a person operating a bicycle to ride at the edge of the roadway when it is unreasonable or unsafe to do so. Conditions that may require riding away from the edge of the roadway include when necessary to avoid fixed or moving objects, parked or moving vehicles, surface hazards, or if it otherwise is unsafe or impracticable to do so, including if the lane is too narrow for the bicycle and an overtaking vehicle to travel safely side by side within the lane.

Hey Think "Eat feces and die" .The bikes are breaking the law.
You are definitely part of the problem, but not just with this issue but apparently a lot of others as well. The roads are for transportation and you must share them with everyone. The bikes have that lane, and if they want to ride two abreast and take the entire lane they can, which looks exactly like what they are doing. They law does not say this must be a military style line.

I don't know much about bicycle laws and I don't have an agenda here, but I'm wondering if bikes are licensed like cars? Are people that ride Bikes(adults let's say) in traffic supposed to be licensed? Who decides if a person is qualified to be on a bike in city traffic?
Is there a test? An operators license? A school that teaches the skills required?

Daily Horoscope for February 12

Libra

Your values may not be in line with the values of your associates today; don't compromise your beliefs just to fit in. If it means you need to step back from your friendships to gain more objectivity, so be it. It is never wise to follow the crowd, which all to often leads nowhere. To avoid unnecessary tension between you and your friends, politely decline invitations you do not feel comfortable with.
