I believe if Menno Simons could speak at this conference he would say what he said in 1539 "Tell me, dearly beloved, where and when we have ever read in the Word of the Lord that an unbelieving and disobedient or carnal person received the promise of eternal life? I tell you the truth, dear brothers, nowhere and never. About such it is repeatedly written, as stated by the Holy Spirit, if you live after the flesh you will die.
Item,[likewise] the adulterers, the whores, the homosexuals, the perverts, the impure, the idolators, the drunkards, the proud, the avaricious, those who hate, the betrayers, those who shed innocent blood, the thieves, the murderers, the perjurers, the slanderers, the sorcerers, the liars, the unmerciful, the disobedient, and others of this kind - if they do not repent wholeheartedly,[they] will not inherit the kingdom of God.
-words of Menno Simons from his sermon on The New Birth translated from the original Dutch and edited by Irvin B. Horst, published 1996 by Lancaster Historical Society, Lancaster, PA.

I am also always amazed to see that people are still ignorant enough to equate being gay, lesbian, or bisexual with only sexual acts. Throughout history specific Bible passages have been used by humans to defend domestic violence, child abuse, genocide, etc. which we generally agree now is not okay.
I look forward to the day when more people can look at the big picture of Jesus, the Bible, and the world instead of picking through everything to find one thing to defend bigoted opinions. If you look hard enough at religious texts you can find something to defend almost any opinion you want to claim is Christian.
The Mennonite Church is definitely moving in the right direction!

Perhaps marriage evolved as the union between a man and a woman because that arrangement conveyed a societal good--namely the creation and preservation of families. Even today, few would argue (I think) that having a mother and father is not the optimal arrangement for children. Marriage is not a “fundamental right,”(a phrase used carelessly these days, e.g., owning a house is a fundamental right, etc.) There have always been restrictions on who can marry. You can’t marry your sister, you can’t marry a child etc. The restrictions, too, may perhaps relate to a societal good. Sure, not all married men and women can have or want to have children, and not all conventional marriages are good ones. That doesn’t negate the value of the institution. Must we assume that a thousand generations of human beings were simply stupid and bigoted? They may have a good reason for shaping this institution as they did.

The Word is so misconstrued anymore, and if not misconstrued watered down. Sin is sin and we should boldly proclaim that. This does not mean that we should shun all sinners because God certainly did not shun us. However, we should have the compassion to call sin what it is, in a loving, christian manner. Always with the goal of pointing people to a better relationship with God through his word and prayer.
And this my friends is the rare and elusive True christian. Watch closely as he states what he believes in a loving way. This is indicitive of a true christian unlike "Christians" who often use the religion to hate and raise themselves above the general population. Krikey you better get a good look for your likely not to see one for a while....(no offense JAR i think your awsome people like you should be more in abundance)

Bob, Bob, Bob, quoting Romans 1:27 in isolation, you can make it "mean" whatever you want it to mean, but taken in the context of what Paul (supposedly) actually wrote, it means something far different than what you say it does. Paul is not writing to or about gay people in the first chapter of the Book of Romans but to a group of Christians whom he presumes to be heterosexual but are engaging in behaviors far short of his standards for being a Christian. Read back a few verses and you should realize that his foremost concern is that the Christians of Rome have been engaging in Pagan practices and in his view the consequence of this is the same sex ritualistic sexual practices that he thinks so lowly of. Paul's got a pretty low opinion of sex in general and believes that the highest calling for ANY Christian was to be as celibate as he was, but he does view the goings on in Rome as rather disconcerting. But he's not writing to or for gay folk, that never even crossed his mind and for you to say that he was condemning homosexuality is to show how much you want to torture scripture until it says what you want it to...

Bob, I'm not even going to bother, your ignorance of scripture comes from your desire to force "God" to agree with your hate and I'm not playing any more. Be happy with yourself, because if there really is a "God", you're going to have a lot to answer for...

There has been a huge amount of progress for the GLBT community this year... Marriage is now legalized in Maine, NH and Iowa! Both Republicans and Democrats are endorsing marriage equality, one by one. Heck, even Dick Cheney reassured us that he supports marriage equality.
There are religions that are becoming more and more accepting of homosexuality. Gay families are more visible and openly gay politicians are getting elected to offices.
Folks, please do not focus on the "bob's" of the world. His kind is dying a much faster death than we could have ever imagined 2 yrs ago.
I have read old bobs post, I think the boy has tremendeous knowledge concerning the bible and gods distaste for it. just my input.

You really believe that his guy used the word "homosexuals", 300 years before it was coined? That's a neat trick.
