Hospitals discourage scheduling early birth

Full story: Columbus Dispatch

Most babies are better off with a good, long stay in mom's womb. But a combination of forces -- most notably high-quality neonatal intensive care -- created an environment in which many mothers and their doctors began to think little of bringing babies into the world early, even if there wasn't a good reason for it.

It's about time. A baby can be born up to 42 weeks and still be considered "on time", and if a mother doesn't go into labor until then, it means the baby wasn't ready before then! It is just plain selfish to have an induction or c-section for convenience. The baby's health should ALWAYS come first!

Yes, the baby's health should always come first! I cannot imagine telling my doctor "I am tired of being pregnant... I am only a couple weeks early.. lets have this baby!" I agree, if the momma doesn't go into labor until 40, 41, 42 weeks, then the baby wasn't ready to be born. People never cease to amaze me.....

Ok i read this article and i really disagree! Well i was a premature baby i was supposed to be born on Christmas and i was born on November 10 and when i was born my only problem was a little breathing issue and i was born almost two months early and that wasn't a big issue and you people said two days early is bad. No body really is born on their due date there usually born early or late. Also you said a doctor told a mother that her babys health depends on it well most babys dont know to wash their hands, dont pick there nose and eat stuff off the ground and just pick up any thing and hold it because my nextdoor neighbor has a little boy and he crawled to a pile of their dogs poop and he didn't know any better. So duh the babys health dose depend on the mother. So i think now you people need to research on the topics you write about before you write them!

It's always kind of rubbed me the wrong way when I see women being induced before their due date for no other reason than convenience. I admit, when I'm pregnant, I reach that point in the last trimester where I am just THROUGH with pregnancy. I don't blame moms for feeling this way--you can't help that you're miserable! Doctors need to be the rational ones and encourage moms to cope during those last few weeks instead of scheduling a medically unnecessary and potentially risky induction or cesarean.

My daughters were both premature. One at 27 weeks, one at 36 weeks and NOT by choice. I KNOW first hand the risks of being born even a few weeks early. Thank the gods both of my babies had a good outcome in the long run, but they both had a rough start. After spending 3 months watching all the preterm babies that were in the NICU at Columbus Childrens Hospital with my 1st daughter struggle to live and some not make it, I think ANYONE who gives birth early simply out of convenience is a complete IDIOT!!!

While pregnant with both of my sons I started into premature labor between 21 and 24 weeks. I fought for them with everything I had. Staying in Perinatal Intensive care for weeks and on complete best rest till the delivery. Delivering a baby early just for convenience is so wrong. If some of those "early" delivery moms had to fight for their pregnancy like many of us do they would be thinking twice about it!!!!

If Ohio hospitals are working so hard to drive down the cesarean rate, then why do so many of them have VBAC bans? The last 2 obs that I saw in Ohio said that I should have a repeat cesarean at 36-38 weeks for all births after my second cesarean (because it was an inverted T). I have yet to figure out why so early! I had a beautiful VBAC at 42 weeks at a birth center in MICHIGAN!
Ohio hospitals have a lot of work to do before they can claim that they are working so hard to drive down the number of cesareans. First they need to tell the OBs - Not in our hospital! Second they need to drop the VBAC bans!

Thank god at least one insurance company and some doctors have opened their eyes to the extreme damage that is caused by inducing labor and promoting early labor, lets keep the awareness spreading.

Maybe you should read what people are actually saying before you make ignorant comments? I was saying that induction two days early for no other reason than convenience is something that should not happen... no one said anything about premature babies born naturally????? Did you even read the article, the comments, or even what you wrote?

As a nurse for over 30 years, I am a big believer in "if it's not broken, don't fix it!" When a baby produces enough hormones to start labor, it happens. Why mess with a perfectly good system?

Women do ask for early delivery but I believe there is a physician motive as well. Induced childbirth cuts down on night/weekend/holiday deliveries.

Also, induction makes contractions more painful and harder to control with natural techniques. As induction rates have increased, natural childbirth rates have decreased. No wonder everyone just expects an epidural!
