It's a bit misleading, as he got his energy from a huge immovable 10 kW array which he sold electricity to the grid from, and then later "withdrew" on the road (or withdrew in the lab to crack water into hydrogen). So yes, he used alternative energy sources, but it was not particularly cheat or efficient. See explanation here: http://goo.gl/K8BcG
