I am a member of the long blue line. I graduated many years ago when we were still all women and had to sign in and out to leave campus. My memories are precious. Changing the name won't change our history or our love for the W. It will always be the W for us. Remember the coffee cups we got from Ruth's as a welcome back? Sure Joe Hogan came along in 1982 and won his battle, but he lost his war by failing out of the nursing school. The W isn't for everybody. The name will live on as the W. But, Don't couch in Eudora Welty. Her family has asked that it not be done. Miss Welty herself was not fond of the W. She made that clear in her writings. She was gracious and allowed her name be used to host young writers, but it was for the sake of educating our children. Call it what you want, but it is forever the W to the LONG BLUE LINE. Face it, we are the ones who matter. we pay our dues and keep this small liberal arts university solvent.
