Maybe because it would bring some money and jobs to the dying Decatur economy. And it might get some other people interested in Decatur.

Did you know that they call Decatur little Chicago. They as in the gang member and drug dealers. The police dept is over worked now. Let them do there job with out added more of a problem for them to take care of.If the crime rate was to go down then people well look at Decatur as a place to go.But you have to sell Decatur as a town they want to come to. Look around the inner city do you Victoria do you like what you see or do you live out of town and just pass through Decatur on your way to some place better. One more just thing where well the train depot be? I got it out by the new lake that well not be bulit. I would love for AMTRAK to come to Decatur but we must deal with what we have now and fix it so others are welling to come to Decatur. Thanks |

I understand what you are saying, Jeff. As far as where I live, I have lived in Decatur all my life. I am also a victim of a violent crime. I was almost murdered, so I believe I understand crime better than most. I am also unemployed - and I know many others who are unemployed as well...there are no jobs out there. Unfortunately, people are losing what jobs there are and losing their homes, etc. which will in turn probably increase the crime. So then it will be the lack of jobs and hurting economy that causes crime to go up and not because Amtrak came to town. I am just saying that something needs to be done soon to help with the Decatur economy. |

a big reason for public transportation is to help america become less addicted to oil. years ago my grandmother used to take the inurban train from niantic to decatur. my husband granmother took it from illiopolis to decatur. people who work outside of the city could use this instead of driving. if you want to go to chicago, etc...take the amtrak right from your town or city without having to drive to lincoln.
