Expert FiredWho Warned Levees Would Burst

Full story: www.gregpalast.com

Fifteen hundred people drowned. That's the bottom line Four years on, there's another victim face down in the waters of Hurricane Katrina, Dr. Ivor van Heerden. I don't get to use the word "heroic" very often. Van Heerden is heroic. The Deputy Director of the Louisiana State University Hurricane Center, it was van Heerden who told me, on camera, something so horrible, so frightening, that, if it weren't for his international stature, it would have been hard to believe: "By midnight on Monday the White House knew. Monday night I was at the state Emergency Operations Center and nobody was aware that the levees had breeched. Nobody." .

Van Heerden is one of the very few heros of the Hurricane Katrina disaster.

They should be building monuments to him, not firing him.

Some decent college or university should hire him.One that is not for sale to a corrupt state government or the right-wing interests. Thanks for posting this article! Obviously not in Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, or Texas. This story is not at all well known. and how many people would actually care if it were? The right-wing white racists and extremists would say it is in the past, forget it. The right-wing Republicans and white racists take the attitude that anything about a Republican Administration is in the past, and irrelevant. But they attack every past SDemocratic President all the way back to FDR.

How soon ideology replaces the facts

http://newsbusters.org/node/2072

On the Saturday edition of the NBC Nightly News, anchored by John Seigenthaler, correspondent Lisa Myers reported several critical mistakes made by Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco in handling the Hurricane Katrina crisis. The story even showcased a whispered conversation, recorded by CNN, between Blanco and an aide in which Blanco admitted she had been too slow in asking for federal troops. Blanco: "I really need to call for the military ... and I should have started that in the first call."

Myers also relayed that when Blanco and New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin ordered a mandatory evacuation 20 hours before Katrina hit, they were ignoring the advice of experts who had warned it would take 48 hours. Additionally, Blanco was slow to get National Guard troops to restore order.

Which makes it all the more ironic that the hero of this suppressed story is a White dude from South Africa.

Daily Horoscope for January 6

Aries

The behaviour of somebody around you (most probably your partner or family member) may be rather irrational today. Alternatively, a surprise involving one of these people is possible. Try to keep your domestic plans reasonably flexible to cover all possible outcomes. The focus is on improving your relationship with your partner or with friends today. Any outings should go very smoothly.
