America's hidden unemployment crisis

Full story: www.msnbc.msn.com

Over the past decade, U.S. businesses increasingly have relied on contract workers as a way to keep a lid on health care and retirement benefit costs and to give them more flexibility to adjust payrolls as conditions change. Now, with the American economy flashing code red, companies from Wall Street to Silicon Valley are casting off temporary workers and freelancers left and right, typically without any severance pay.

Many underlying factors are to blame for unemployment. Most of them are caused by government regulations.

America's once massive heavy industry was lost due to pollution laws that essentially made most heavy industry illegal and bankrupted industrial companies with heavy fines and cleanup costs as well as prohibitively high costs to convert to clean technology. Red China has one trillion dollars of money that should have stayed in the U.S. as industrial profits. Massive American industrial job losses have never been replaced.

Affirmative actions laws have hamstring American companies for the last 40 years. Companies have been fined and have been required to hire extra employees, some to accomplish the work and others to fill de facto racial quotas. One of the major reasons for using contract workers is because its a way to circumvent affirmative action. Another method, and much more popular, has been to relocate overseas.

Other expensive regulations include, worker's comp, unemployment contributions, Social Security contributions, OSHA requirements, health care regulations(like employer COBRA payments) and taxes in general.

The recent financial collapse traces to federal laws forcing mortgage companies to grant home loans to unqualified borrowers. The borrowers with poor repayment histories were the very ones who defaulted on home loans, just like mortgage companies feared. Another fiasco was to outlaw "redlining". Mortgage companies had previously refused to grant loans in neighborhoods where civil rights inspired race riots had burned down neighborhoods, high crime rates had made for property value declines and refusal of insurance companies to cover these risky homes in "redlined neighborhoods". obama himself brought a lawsuit against Citicorp for "redlining" back when he was a lawyer.

You nsist on blaming President Obama for the criminal excesses of the Bush adminisdtration. You continue to be a fool.

Obamaa did not create the American train wreck; Bush did. It is, however, Obama's job to fix it.As soon as Senator Franken is confirmed, the threat of GOP NO-ism will fade, along with their ability to block the will f the American people with filibustering.

Then, let us hope, that our president will be successful; and our country will recover from the terrible ruin the neo-conservative GOP has left us.

What we need is a major fee on imports; to cover gthe cost of unpacking them, inspecting them, and repacking them.

What we doon't need is tax breaks for off-shoring; or any uninspected import goods. A shirt made in Malaysia could have a bullet intended for terroriats folded into it. Every piece must be inspected. Who pays? The importer.

And, the underlying factor for unemployment is, simply, greed on the part of employers. The acting factor is poor protection for American workers, including as anothe correspondant noted above, deregulation.

You display yet more misinformation when you blame the fiscal crisis on mortgage lending. That is a symptom, not a cause.

The cause of the fiscal / credit crisis is more deregulation, and also no regulation; of financial instruments such as the insurance of futures contracts. The mortgages are just stuck on the end, like the tail on a donkey.

The stock market, many electrical and other power companies, etc.

A lot of things in this country had regulations meant to keep the rich from driving up the prices of commodities and punking the system taken off them.

Bull. None of those things are caused ONE bit of problems to the businesses, judging from the MASSIVE profits they are still having in this time of trouble, even when they whine that 'we're in trouble!'

Secondly, all of those things you mention: N E C E S S A R Y!(sing it with me) Those are all necessary things in a 21st century country and world, period and done with.

As to the industrial jobs being lost.... yeah, that was a bad idea. But the fact is that it wasn't Democrats who were pushing for those laws that made that possible... IT WAS REPUKIANS!(falsetto voice at the end there)
It also was NOT the pollution laws (which were N E C E S S A R Y!(sing it with me!)) that drove the companies out of business. It was CHEAP and still IS CHEAP to get into adherence with those laws, if you just bite the bullet, stop bitching and suing to stop those things, and just BUY THE TECHNOLOGY TO DO IT!

If the Repukians had NEVER gotten into power..... we wouldn't be having these problems buster! Bush caused 99.999999999999999999999999999 % of the problems we are having right now with his fucking deregulation! That was an INSANELY bad idea, to deregulate everything, especially the stock market, which is a 'ponzi scheme' on it's best day.

Pollution laws were the work of the Republicans!!! That's funny enough to get you a job on the Comedy Club!!! Pollution laws trace back to jimmy carter and mortgage laws trace back to jimmy carter and bill clinton. Affirmative action traces back to Richard Nixon and all have caused American job losses because they all have put huge costs on American businesses.

$3,400 monthly housing cost? Good Lord! Can't imagine one SAVING for a RAINY day with such EXTRAVEGANCE !! I have NO PITY for people who spend ALL their money living high on the hog today ... and cry tomorrow when the money dries up. Had she only chose a $2,000 housing cost (which I still think is quite high), but had she chose $2,000 for her monthly housing cost two years ago, she'd HAVE $33,600 in her pocket today. And by the way, IF MORE PEOPLE actually saved some money ... the ECONOMY wouldn't be so negatively impacted by unemployment. People could use their 'rainy day' fund and NOT BE SUCH A DRAG on the economy.

This convoluted idea that the recession was caused by a credit crunch is nuts. Thus the idea that it will recover if money if forced through the system is nuts.
Exactly which company has been in the situation of having plenty of orders to fill, but having to lay off workers because they have a cash flow problem that they can’t finance?

His name was John McCain....
Look up Forbes articles just a few months before the election.

Also, look up how brokers "regulate" themselves... It's rather corrupt. Those who pay the most, get the best ratings.

Do you actually trust Wall Street to regulate it's self in the right way with Trillions of dollars worth of US savings and investments?

Daily Horoscope for January 8

Sagittarius

You'll feel friendly with everyone you meet today, and you might even be lucky financially. Money should be coming in, but going out rather fast as well... Astral influences will keep you on your toes, and will probably make you flirtatious, but they could also make you moody. This makes it tricky for close relationships to run on an even keel. The truth is, perhaps you don't want too much closeness at the moment. Your partner probably knows that you're often like this, by now, anyway.
