Waking up this morning and hearing about the desire for the government not to help those that have reached the end of their unemployment payments, the above quote from Dicken' "Christmas Carol" came to mind. A tear came to my eye and at the same time I felt rage come over me!

These people, many having had good jobs and losing their jobs not by anything they did will now find themselves soon out on the street, living in shelters or worse yet in tents under highway underpasses - if they are lucky. The news says that by Jan.-Feb 2011 those not receiving any aid will be over 300,500 million people. I hope I mis read this and it is only 3,500 million. Even this amount is way too large. I pity the adults, both male and female - but what about the children?

If one lives in warmer climates it is possible to survive - but in the NE of the US winter is a killer for adults caught out in the elements. What will happen when we begin to find children frozen to death when they simply froze to death on a cold night?

It seems like Ebenezer Scroog has yet to meet his angels of past, present and future - but the whole "Christmas Carol" rings so horridly true for our country this year.

Yes, I know that most of us feel hopeless. We are only one or two people. But I have an idea. I hope you will consider it and maybe follow through with it.

This is the idea our family has come up with. WE will buy a few gifts for ourselves - simple gifts and then take the rest of the money we would have spent on ourselves and send money to hunger centers, churches with food pantries, The Salvation army and other places we know can use the money more then we can! Also, for those of you how have pets.... many pets will be turned out and left to run free since their owners no longer can pay for food for them. They will end up in the Animal Protective League, if they are lucky. Money given to the APL will help them to give service to these animals.

If you don't have money to spare - and these usually are the poorest who try to give the most - look through your clothing and see if there is any you can pass on to others who will need warm clothing. Check with elementary schools and see if gloves and hats are needed - you can pick these up cheaply at Wal-Mart and other places. These small $1.00 items will be very welcome.

Again,. I ask you to consider those people who have nothing this Christmas..........some of our more nasty writers will say "they deserve it"..... but nobody deserves to be out on the streets freezing in this so called time of joy and rememberence of the true meaning of Christmas. I belong to no specific denominaton but learned much from the Bible in my early years. The rich will not get into heaven for they have their heaven here on earth - while those poor will get into heaven after the sad lives they had here on earth! I think the Bible states that for the rich - it will be easier for a camel to fit through the eye of a needle then for a rich man to enter heaven!

I beg you to remember the poor this season of dark and coldness. They are not just the poor that many people, sadly, say deserve what they get in life. Rather think of the children - they did nothing to deserve any of this! And many of those, now pennyless used to hold well paying jobs and worked hard - but due to outsourcing and etc. their jobs are gone and they have little if anyting to fall back on.

Maybe, if all of us considered what I have written a small miracle could happen and these people could at least find shelter and food until winter breaks. Sadly, it doesn't seem that our government cares.

Am I reading your right - you want the homeless to die in the freezing cold of this winter?

My God, if this is what the "REAL" Americans are like you sicken my stomach and and make me very sad to call myself an American.

Socialism has nothing to do with this.... rather plain old Judeo-Christian concern for the poor!

BTW, neither the Quran or the Bible mention our wonderful constitution that many of you want to wrap yourself in..........What I write is NOT socalism, it is common courtesy.

Many of our richest citizens in from the early 1900's back felt it their duty to help the homeless! And they were Capitalists!

Socialists and Communists are NOT the SAME. Read some books and show some intelligence.

BTW, I hope you will always have a warm and comfortable life with food in your pantry and a bed and blankets on a cold night. The Creator may not look too kindly on you and others who feel your way!

May the Creator help you to find some understanding and soul.........you certainly need it. Could you given name be "Scrooge" Mr. Owl?

It all depends on how you use the term "welfare".

Historically, at least in England, the church took care of the poor in each parish. The good Christians thought it their duty to at least feed and cloth those worse off then they were. By doing this they guaranteed themselves a place in Heaven!

Sadly this eventually turned into the workhouse - something I think many people who write on these forums want us to bring back! If you have ever read Charles Dickens' work you will remember the workhouse well - many of his characters came from this place in the beginning of the stories.

Secondly, there was the poor house - where people who could not pay their debts would be sent until they COULD pay them. Of course if you didn't have any money to pay your debts before you ended up in the poor house you would never get the money to get out. A catch 22!

But then there came a certain enlightenment when photos finally showed what life was really like in the old New York City areas where the poor were forced to live in the late 1`800's and early 1900's. Some of the rich were actually moved to help these people get better lives - night schools where they could learn English, schools for the children - medical care for women and children. And of course Andrew Carneigie who gave most of America free libraries!

Of course, I am not a member of the Supreme Court, so I really have no right to explain to you what the Constitution really means in your quote "promote the general welfare". Since I can't really figure where you are coming from with this question I can only say that each of us has their own idea of what "general welfare" means.

I'll go out on a limb and say, for me, that it means that if I work hard and am not laid off by bosses who only care about how big their pay check is my general welfare will be good. If I have enough food and medical care to keep me and my family fed and healthy, then my welfare is good.

Sadly, the people we are talking about - the majority, have lost their jobs through downsizing and having their jobs shipped overseas where their current bosses now can collect the majority of what was once the worker's pay and use it to line their own cash filled pockets.

What it all boils down to is simply, if a country has a middle class that feels safe and secure the country, itself, will be safe, secure and will not find itself in debt and nearing some type of battle between the "haves" and "have nots". NOW, you must understand that I am not saying this might or should happen. All I am saying is that with no middle class history has shown that we are headiong for trouble.

We had one civil war already - and if the have not's begin to outnumber the "haves" - God knows what might happen here. I pray fo my country and all out rights..........

This be about ALL the people - last time I saw A "WHITE PERSON" they were an albino! Take a look at your own skin... you are a shade of pink to tan - depending on how long you were out in the sun this summer! Get help, you need it, pronto - su idiota!

BTW, what color is your hair and your eyes.... gotta be careful there one never knows!

Since this thread was about letting useless people die off, I just assumed it was about the coloreds. Honest mistake.

I write Vive Le Constitution. Socialists, leave us to our nation and judgement is passed on me for being a SCROOGE. I am not going to mention what I am and am not because frankly this site is not about me. The entire post was well written and I was commenting on the last paragraph with the sentence, sadly, it doesn't seem our government cares. The Constitutional form of our former government cared a whole lot more about the poor than the present socialist government of the United States but you see, no one can truthfully criticise the socialist government of the present administration without being labelled a racist. I would whole lot rather wrap myself in the CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES than this socialism claptrap a huge percentage of Americans have wrapped themselves in 2008 and continuing in wrapping themselves in 2010. The socialist state of California actually reelected the socialist Nancy Pelosi. I never in my wildest dreams thought Americans would wrap themselves in socialist trash and garbage. Constitutionalism wasn't good enough for them, not enough handouts and governmental goodies, too sorry to work for themselves but had to depend completely on governmental socialism. Thanks, Hiram, for judging me as a Scrooge, lacking understanding, intelligence, and soul. I will use the same words my wife's dad told the man years ago, I thank God you're not the judge. My dear Mr. Owl,

It is sad that you think all Democrats are Socialists. The last Democrat that one could possibly lable as a socialist in this country was FDR, and it was his "socialist" WPA that gave the unemployed workers jobs, created vast national parks and roads and also many of the buildings we still use. If this is socialism I cannot see anything wrong with it.

All I have ever asked was that BOTH parties find a way to work together to rebuild this country to what it once was. But the constant tearing apart we are having - Dems., vs. Reps. and the horrid hatred I see of anyone who is not lily white pains me greatly.

I was brought up to believe that if one worked hard and did the best they could they would live a decent life ..........but times have changed, generations have changed and now few people care about anything but themselves and to hell with their neighbor. I am not piting Dem against Reps or black against white. I just wish we could all work together for the common good of this country and forget labels and political parties and just try to fix this country before it falls apart.

This is my wish for both Christmas and teh New Year. May 2011 be a year of peace and rebuilding of this dear country of ours - not by one side or the other - rather by BOTH parties working together for the good of all America..........

I have not said nor ever said all Democrats are socialists. I have said most Democrats are socialists but have never use the word all in stating the fact. I have even said and written some Republicans are Socialists. I have acknowledged the hierarchy of the Democrat Party are Socialists even going so far as to say the Democrat Party is more correct being called the ASP, American Socialist Party and that is not saying the rank and file voters of the Democrat party are Socialists but many are. I have also stated before and will now state the Republican party for the last few years has been the flip side of the same coin. There is no way to convince those who know that John McCain is not at least a socialist sympathiser for the simple reason he compromises like a sympathiser. Today politics are Not Democrat/Republican. That is 20th century archaism. Here in the 21st century it is Constitutionalism versus Socialism. One is either a Constitutionalist or a Socialist. That's bottom line. Take your pick.

The Republicans would like to take all middle class and union folk and line them up and shoot them! My lord,(with a bow and a tip of my hat) if I am now called a socialist you must in truth take the term of fudalist!

Do you know what that means? It means that those with the gold (the republicans) have ALL the power over us with little or nothing.

Remember, in time the slaves will rise up! Watch out.

Rather then being a Socialist, as you sweem to insist I am, I prefer the European term of "Democratic Socialist"..... Thank you!

Aaah, I do not insist on calling you a socialist. Just as a woman's slip shows sometimes, your socialism is showing by the PHRASES and TERMINOLOGY you use. They are typical socialist phrases out of Marx, Engels, Feuerbach. Lenin, Dzugashvili and to a lesser extent Gramsci. The Gramsci form of Socialism is what your socialist president is using through the wonderful Saul Alinsky who is also the mentor of Hillary Clinton.
