Zellwood Sweet Corn Festival canceled for 2009

Full story: Orlando Sentinel

Aw shucks! After countless bushels and 35 straight years of celebrating the sugary kerneled crop of Orange County's farming past, the Zellwood Sweet Corn Festival is canceled for 2009.

This stinks! I loved the Zellwood Corn Festival! Of all the things that stink about our economy, this has got to be the worst.

Clearly, the beauty and simplicity of the festival is lost on one as sophisticated as you.

Time has passed this hick festival by.

No real loss. I'm sure there's a mud bog going on somewhere or on some channel.

Git-r-dun.

Truly the end of an era.Really hasn't been the same since they made all those farms dissappear because of lake apopka years ago and for what? The lake was dead and won't be viable for years to come.

Yeah, I've never gone because it just seems like a looooong drive for very little. I can buy corn at the grocery store.
By the way, since they won't be selling corn at this festival, did the farmers factor that into their 2009 sales? I wouldn't mind cheap corn practically given away next corn season. Every little bit saves.

But, sure, let's blame it on the economy.

But actually the "era" ended many years ago. Lake Apopka is slowly coming back now that the muck farms aren't dumping thousands of gallons of fertilizer in the lake. But when the farms closed the corn festival imported all the corn so the true corn festival died when the farms closed!

From the quote in the article--"for the festival that has seen its past crowds of 35,000 dwindle in recent years." It sounds to me like the festival has been on the decline for a while. So it's insincere to blame the economy. WHere the hell is the pioneer spirit in this county? Bunch of woosies! Even with 10% unemployment-you still have 90% of the people working.

I've been going to the ZCF since I was a kid (even though I don't think I'm a "hick"). I always loved to buy a bushel of corn. I really hate to see this happen.
