we're at a surplus in Michigan... and how did that happen? through higher taxes? taxing the rich?? nope - CUTS IN SPENDING!!! hmmm.....

now that we have a surplus we can go back and look at what we can afford to add back (or save it for a rainy day)...

aw nevermind... it would NEVER work for the federal gov't... sorry to waste your time.

how come Gran"mole" couldn't figure this out? i mean she is/was a really smart woman, right?

sorry - wasted time again.. my bad.

Yeah, you are wasting your time.

Ask yourself these questions:

What was unemployment in Michigan during Granholms time?

The budgets were balanced in Michigan. It's the LAW. And, we had a Republican legislature.

How much will spending cuts affect education? Do you care?

Ask those questions and come back later. I'm not saying Snyder is doing a bad job- but look at it from all sides.

Well as an accounting & finance major it's simple. Don't spend more money then you take in. DUH!!!

Unlike many of my college classmates, I plan on graduating college debt free while paying for college myself working my Dutch ass off.

Rainy days: Yes, I learned that all too well while I was off work for 6 weeks due to my pre Christmas appendicitis. I was back in school on time & I returned to work this past Monday.

No. education was not affected (at least in the school district my kids go to, it wasn't) since the cuts. And yes I care.

We're talking budget here Bonds. Not unemployment. But since you brought it up. Unemployment is higher now than with Jenny. And STILL she couldn't balance a budget. Seems to me you could figure out that her ideas (as Obama's) are bad ideas for recovery.

Balanced budget? Now we ave a surplus. Didn't while Jenny was in office for how many years?

Different points of view take you to different places I guess.

BD, it's state law to have a balanced budget. So we did have them. And it was achieved through cuts and things(stupid things) like the MBT.

I wasn't enthralled with Jenny. Keep in mind that the Repubs. held the state in the legislature, though. Now you have all Republicans in control, and more gets done. They DID cut education, and police, etc.

I support the new bridge wholeheartedly but not the possible increase in gas tax. Got a surplus? Spend THAT on roads. Rainy day funds are a good idea.

Anna, not sure where you go to school, but some tuitions are in excess of $30K a year now. Unless you've got help from your parents, almost no students can achieve paying that for a year and living at the same time- and be debt free. Community college- possibly.

Be reeeeal careful with the "better than thou" logic- employers can spot it a mile away.

That's pretty funny, BD.

The way I look at it, Anna doesn't need coddling. So if she's gonna mix it up with her own opinions, i'll offer mine. No special treatment.

Will your kids graduate college debt free just from being "smart"?

Well.. violent crime is down (in most states)
Despite warnings of "blood in the streets" and "the old west" ( and BTW the old west was never the old west) states with concealed carry have experienced a drop in violent crimes.

We can do with less police.
What sucks is cuts in fire and EMT's.

Can't carry a fire truck or doctor in yer pocket-

Yes. Smart enough to go to a college that's NOT gonna put them "in the hole". Work smart not hard. Plus they know NOTHING is free. So they know they'll have to work for what they get.
Already got scholarships and grants to take care of a bunch. The rest they can work for. I paid mine. They can pay theirs.

Of course nothing is FREE. That's why you get loans. Am I an idiot now because I didn't graduate from a 2-year program?

Grants don't go to people who aren't poor enough. Grants don't make you smart, they make you entitled, don't they? Not everyone gets them. And what about the HUGE increases in education cost? Cuts help that to happen. It's amazing how you'll scream about your right to your gun, but education for your kids? Meh. That's a "liberal" cause. Can't get many jobs with a gun.

if they only made $30k a yr, there should be something done about it. problem is - they make WAY more than that

The overall median 9 month salary for all professors was $73,000, placing a slight majority of professors among the top 15% of earners at age 25 or older.[7] Yet, their salaries remain considerably below that of some other comparable professions (even when including summer compensation) such as lawyers (who earned a median of $110,000) and physicians (whose median earnings ranged from $137,000 to $322,000 depending on speciality).[17][18] According to the U.S. Department of Labor,

[Academic year] salaries for full-time faculty averaged $73,207. By rank, the average was $98,974 for professors,$69,911 for associate professors,$58,662 for assistant professors,$42,609 for instructors, and $48,289 for lecturers. Faculty in 4-year institutions earn higher salaries, on average, than do those in 2-year schools. In 2006–07, faculty salaries averaged $84,249 in private independent institutions,$71,362 in public institutions, and $66,118 in religiously affiliated private colleges and universities

for 9 months a year (if that).

73K for a professor? You think that is high? Even though they have to have a Masters or Doctorate? I'd say it's a damn bargain. And..PUBLIC teachers work 9 months a year. Professors don't.

So now that we've established the increase in costs isn't going to their salary...could it be their health insurance costs?

But- right- as long as the BUSINESS or INSTITUTION has to absorb that cost, not the employee, it won't affect a darn thing.

Rainbows and unicorns, BD?

Well I am attending community college (KVCC) right now. I am attending college full time (12 credit hours) while working two part time jobs about 51 hours per week. So yes, I am working my Dutch ass off to be debt free. After I earn my associates degree, I plan on (hopefully) working full time during the day, while going to school part time in the evening to earn my bachelor's degree.

Unless someone does have a lot of money (to burn), I strongly recommend going to a community college first, then transferring to a four year college. Being $100,000+ in debt before I turn 23 scares me to death!

As far as any help from my parents, I'm not completely independent from them yet. They do put some money in my bank account for food every month. I am also still on their medical insurance policy, which I need to maintain 12 credit hours in the fall & winter school term.

STILL a bargain, BD. Still a bargain. As you can see by your own stats, 4 year colleges get paid more than 2.

Are you telling me that you think someone teaching at the Ross School of Business at Michigan(top 4 in the country) would be overpaid? Sure, offer them $50k and see what happens. If it's such a high paying job, why don't you go do it? It's easy, right?

Anna:

That's what I did- 2 then 4 year- no WAY I could afford all 4 year, and that was 10 years ago or more. I'm not taking away your grit- it's admirable- but not always realistic for everyone.

I have to laugh, though- BD HATES spending- but is just ok with grants and scholarships- who pays for those, BD?
