Hannah Page's perpetrators should be arrested. Hannah Page and Jason Brock are the ones trying to start a Gay-Straight Alliance at the Yulee High School but before and after this they have faced anti-gay bullying and violence. What's wrong with you Yulee schools and Nassau County School Board? Why haven't these students, if not charged with a hate crime, at least arrested for assault and/or battery? You claim you are looking out for the students over not allowing this club. You could have fooled me. Since when have you cared about the safety and well being of students when for years you have let students who are gay or perceived to be gay or different in any way be bullied, beat up, harassed, discriminated against, and intimidated. You've looked the other way when these things happened and sometimes punish the victims soley. Don't deny it, Superintendent Ruis. I've seen it happen when I've attended the school system. I know nothing has changed in over 20 years. How can you not know this goes on? I challenge you, Ruis, and the school board to prove me wrong. You all have a responsibility to see that these students are in an a violence-free/discrimination-f ree environment. Prove me wrong by having these students are arrested when they decide to break the law and hit another student. I encourage students who are victims of violence to demand to speak to the police and demand a police report be made and an arrest if possible. I'm not an attorney, but common sense says that you have a right to call the police when you are a victim of a crime. If the school refuses to let you call them then they are denying you rights. Find a payphone around there and call 911 if you don't have change to dial the sheriff's office's non-emergency number and have them connect you with non-emergency. In situations like these I encourage them to report the hate crimes to the Nassau County Sheriff's Office, Nassau County State Attorney's Office, FDLE, FBI, Florida FBI (Jacksonville, FL), Human Rights Campaign (HRC), Lambda Legal, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Florida ACLU, and Equality Florida. Students have rights and have the right to be free of bullying, violence, harassment, intimidation, retaliation, and discrimination. Students: Also consider pursuing civil charges against your perpetrators, the school attended, and the school board.

There is a document online that claims Hannah Page and Jason Brock had food thrown at them, etc. Why aren't these students in jail? Since when is it okay to assault and batter someone and get away with it just because the perpetrator is another juvenile?

Hannah Page/Jason Brock:

If I were in your shoes I would pursue civil and/or criminal charges against these students and the school board if I were in your shoes based on the violence, etc. you have dealt with and the denial of your human, civil, and constitutional rights and the Gay-Straight Alliance you tried to start on two different occassions.

Nassau County is so against the Gay-Straight Alliance but did they ever stop to think that there may have not been a need for one in the first place if they did their jobs years ago and stopped violence against GLBT students? I am ashamed of the Nassau County School Board. Where is their morals when it comes to protecting students?

I go to YHS and i disagree with this club. I dont hate gay people, but they dont have to act like total flamers. That is why they get picked on.

All gays do not act like "total flamers" but if they did that is their right. It is also their right to have a club. You say you don't hate gay people but I don't see how that can be so when you condone them being picked on for being born the way they are. The law says they can have the club and you have every right not to like the content and gays and feel any way you want. You do not however have a right to stop them from having their club nor does anyone have a right to commit violence against them. What is happening to gay students in schools with bullying and violence and all is a crime in the eyes of the law. You don't have to like gays but you do not have the right to harass or hit or throw things at people just because you disagree with the way they live their life. School kids should learn these things before they get out in the real world and get arrested for such thing. By law, they can be arrested for hitting or throwing food or other objects at other students and go through the juvenile justice system which is what they deserve if they commit such crimes.

You'd be surprised how many "straight" men are actually gay or bisexual or how many high school football players, rednecks, etc. that like other men. I've lived in this county long enough to know about that. So, some of the "straight" guys you hang out with at school may in fact be gay, bisexual, or have experimented with other guys. Of course, many would never admit to it.

It's not a choice to be gay. You have no proof of that. Maybe you need to quit being a baby and learn to co-exist with those who are different from you. Go ahead, you and your friends go on and pick on the gays at school, but once you cross a certain line like hitting them or throwing things at them, prepare to be arrested because that's exactly what they deserve for it. Just because you don't feel anti-gay violence should be against the law doesn't mean it is not against the law because it IS against the law and you can be arrested for it. Hitting anyone is a crime, just because the victim happens to be gay doesn't make you exempt under the law. So if you and your friends want to be criminals and do those things and are willing to suffer the consequences such as going to jail, on probation, doing community service, or possibly getting a restraining order against you then go ahead. You people act like you are so moral but you condone criminal activity.

I am so glad Hannah Page and the ACLU have won. I think she needs to sue those who harassed her as well.

Go Obama! He signed the federal hate crime expansion legislation into law. Now actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, and disibility are protected. Now students like Jason Brock and Hannah Page will be protected from violence and schools will be forced to act on the harassment of LGBT students.

Those who attacked Hannah and her friends should be punished.

Daily Horoscope for December 31

Capricorn

A certain person is strong-willed with the Full Moon in your emotional house of others. It's a lunar eclipse too, so this could lead to some ructions in which everyone becomes firmly entrenched in their own opinions and refuses to acknowledge anyone else's point of view. Get the arguments out of the way early on, so you can then concentrate on having a really enjoyable New Year's Eve.
