Concerning the first white rose of today, minority recruitment on city school projects is nothing new. And it actually started before the Black Roundtable pack took over the school board. At least minority construction businesses were given a fair shake when it came to sharing in the employment opportunities. Today thanks to Kirkland and his cronies the minority in the district is the white person looking to put food on the table.

Kirkland and his cronies are gone. Now it is Foust and his cronies running the show. Let's see if there are going to be any changes to hush the lips of KISS. Keep in mind that the fact of the matter is, ALL of the top officials in the city school district are qualified, professional white people earning 6 figure salaries none of which live in the city.

You may be right that Kirkland and his cronies are gone but it will take years to undo the bad that they did. And the issue goes beyond the top officials in the district. The mainstay of the district is the everyday common workers throughout the district. And unfortunately under the friends and family program alot of unqualified and underperforming people were hired and are still employed. And Foust and his cronies will find it hard to right the wrongs as they move forward and create their own mess.

I am afraid the main point is still a dream to a lot of people who refuse to face the number one fact, that is:
1. Quality people are in demand in the suburbs too, so why would a person such as this come to an urban district where fights are common place, staples are thrown at the principal, the test scores are so low that the state could take over at any second and board members almost come to blows over issues?

You make it sound like Kirkland and his cronies had a large pool to select from.
Do you realize that the last round of applicants to be an assistant principal at York High, only one person applied? Let me repeat this,,,,,for a job that pays $85,000, with good benefits only one person in the whole wide world applied.
Do you realize that 42 jobs for teachers remained unfilled last school year because nobody, repeat, nobody applied for the position?
Do you realize that there is no one single person in the entire city of York who has the qualification mandated by the state to be a teacher?
Do you realize that only Kim Miller who took advantage of the program to further ones education and become a professional teacher?
Do you realize that most of the fans of KISS would rather be a hall monitor, or a janitor than apply themselves to become qualified for higher positions in the district?
Do you realize that elected board members do not attend meeting on a regular basis?
Do you realize that KISS is free to apply for any position in the district through Dr. Holmes?

And don't forget that Ron Martin remined us on WGAL TV news that paint has been thrown all over the walls of a newly remodeld 90 million dollar school.
I am told that the number of girls pregnant is so high that it is the norm so much that a Day Care Program is in the school.
If you think Kirkland or anybody else can stop, improve, control this mess, send them to the President of the School Board and I am sure Jeanette Torres will hire them in a heartbeat.

In the mean time, we do the best we can and soon Mrs Miller will step to the plate as the new supt. and it will be "MIller Time." Let's all join up to help her. She is going to new it.

You poor souls. You speak as if this is only a York City problem. This is a problem nation wide. The first thing we need to do is heed the words of Obama and turn the tv's off. Do you realize that city kids spend more time watching the trash of BET TV than they would ever spend working on homework? Let's not forget about the Ricans too. Most of them could not give a hoot about education in urban districts too. I was at the PTA meeting of Jackson school and only 4 Rican parents showed up even though the school is over run by Rican students.

My facts were reported to the school board last week while I was sitting in the audience. If they are in correct, see Dr. Holmes, Personnel Director and Mrs. Sharon Miller, Superintendent or Jeanette Torres, President of the school board. If you will look at the bulletin boards in the district you will note that there are 22 teachig positions available as of July 28, 2008 that have not been filled and not a person on the face of the earth has expressed an interest in applying for. Take one guess why and will the prize.

I witnessed Ms. Miller's management at Ferguson Elementary. She is truly someone who believes in high standards and is able to do more with less. I'm hopeful about what can happen under her leadership...with the community's support.

That's the problem, the community has ZERO INFLUENCE over the schools in York. THose making six figures know that they can do nothing, but fill their friends and their pockets with $$$ and retire in a few years to huge pensions AND grab a high paying job else where for a few years.
Carlos Lopez did it, Diggs, Miller will in less than 2 years. I can guarantee that.

Your point has merit. I often ponder how 50-60 years ago, inferior schools with fewer resources (under Plessy vs. Ferguson) produced more scholars than heavily funded schools in ultra-modern edifaces do today. Those who embrace liberation theology should be ashamed of themselves. I don't know if you got to see the HBO documentary, "Tough Times At Douglass High"? I find it very troubling that a school that produced the nation's first African-American Supreme Court Justice now barely produces students who can read, write or compute. It begs the question, what are we, the beneficiaries of the Civil Rights Movements, doing wrong today???
