Just use common sense when you're posting comments... Anytime you publish ANYTHING you should do so with caution.

There have been leaks about who posters are within our own community. Ask a recently retired ranking fire official.

Good luck trying to prove any of the posters were at the scene. Many of the people who post would never go Into the city for any reason. It's just their opinion.

I don't know if you noticed, but the names being sought are for a criminal investigation...not just for identity exploitation...
...and is what you post really ALL that important anyhow? No one's gonna seek you out for your random opinion for no good reason...

any judge that would allow a anonymous posters to be searched out has lost his or her way with freedom of speech!
hell half the things on here are not even true, people give their opinion based on how they feel that day and often just to antagonize other posters so what truth would come out of such a thing?
this is just blowing smoke up posters alley so they do not post certain free speech feelings!

This is why REBERT must be thrown out of his 'sleazy' office. We need a real DA, not this fool

I've never tried to hide my identity in blogs. Even Toni smith knows who I am and has warned me to stop blogging about her. The first amendment has not yet been repealed, last time I looked. That said, ff someone one was an eyewitness to a crime, and blogs about it rather than telling the police about it, they have not fulfilled their obligations as a citizen, and should be summoned to tell their story.

the only way to tell if one is "just talking" is to go straight to the source and further question... which is why the Judge is seeking their identities.. And, sidenote, no one's right to free speech has been denied...The possibility of one's identity being revealed doesn't really have much to do with free speech. Posting anonymously - though I can understand it - just is a way to not have to take responsibility for something said.

I have nothing to hide in anything I have posted here on this forum. They wouldn't have to go to the length of having to find out who I am to testify if I had information on a crime. But that's just who I am. It's up to each person to decide if they want to keep posting. As for me, so what if someone knows who we really are?

I hope the posters who threatened to quit are serious. Many if not most of the posts from people who can barely type but not quite think are garbage. There are no First Amendment issues in this story, just ignorance of the law.

I wouldn't have said ignorance of the law....just ignorant.

Hopefully the city uses the information they gather carefully - I would hate to think that such information would be used by vindictive politicians. That could lead to one hell of a lawsuit and we all know the city really can't afford to lose again!

If your loved one was killed and there was a chance that someone who wrote a comment that gave the impression that they saw what happened wouldn't you want to talk to them? I doubt it will lead to much real information but I wish them well.

New York Times v. Sullivan, 376 U.S. 254 (1964) The Court held that the First Amendment protects the publication of all statements, even false ones, about the conduct of public officials except when statements are made with actual malice (with knowledge that they are false or in reckless disregard of their truth or falsity). Under this new standard, Sullivan's case collapsed.
