I like this idea - I'm glad someone finally took notice that animals are often left suffering the pains that some cannot inflict on their estranged significant others.

Every state should follow suit. It's the least we can do for innocent animals who can't defend themselves.

a little justice for the poor dogs that were killed in a Thomaston fire that was meant to inflict pain on the husband of some disturbed woman who never thought of the poor defenseless dogs in the house.

It is about time someone included the protection of animals. Now if we could just get labs to leave them alone and stop using animals for their experiments.

In regards to "truth hurts," I am so sorry for your pain and the fact that you're not being given what is obviously necessary to protect you - in some small way. It's outrageous that you've not been granted an order of protection from the judge. That, in itself, is criminal, and the laws must change or judges must be forced to see what is going on and do something different.
While I am so disgusted by your treatment, "truth hurts," I am still glad to see the In regards to the new law in Maine which is meant to protect animals. It doesn't address the craziness of your not being granted the protection you deserve, but it does address a relevant issue which is important to many of us. Whether people are animal lovers or not, there's no denying that there's a link between cruelty to animals and abuse towards humans. If for no other reason, Maine should be commended for this new law. In some small way it will make a difference for some - human and animals.
For those of you who think it's stupid, you're entitled, but I am glad to see Maine doing something progressive like this. Instead of laughing at what Maine is doing or making fun of the state/region, you can demand a change in laws for those such as "truth hurts" and still appreciate what Maine is trying to with this new law. Please don't put Maine down for its stance, but argue for better laws and enforcement of them in places such as Florida. Putting pressure on those in charge will make a difference for others who are seeking orders of protection like "truth hurts" is.

I understand, "truth hurts." I know you weren't arguing the law, and my comments about those who were had been intended for the few who expressed disgust that there would be a law aiming for animals being "protected." I was sincere in what I said regarding your case. It's crazy that those who have already proven to be so violent and cruel would be protected more than the victim. If your case doesn't cry out for an order of protection, I don't know that any person's would! I realize that orders of protection don't truly protect potential victims, but not even granting one to you after what has already happened to you is horrible. The animal orders of protection is backed by good intentions, but you're right when you question its effectiveness. Such laws meant to protect humans and/or animals are only effective if they're enforced consistently. I wish you safety, luck, and happiness, "truth hurts."

UH -- you had your skull bashed in. The only reason a judge might not be inclined to impliment a protection order is if you fail to appear in court on the hearing date. In Lincoln County you appear in the court house and file the temporary order. This is granted on a TEMPORARY basis until you have a hearing justifying a permanency to this (or up to 2 years). If you fail to show no matter WHAT the reason is, the order will NOT be granted. If you have been abused and you have a history of filing charges, attempting to obtain PFA's to no avail, you might want to consider going to ALL local politicians who will LISTEN to you -- perhaps even consider writing to Governor Baldacci.

Obviously, this "Name Witheld" in Boston, MA person doesn't have the courage to put their name to their ridiculous comment. Further, they must not be a very caring and/or sensitive person otherwise they would not have made such a statement regarding the welfare of animals and their abused owners.

Historically, it has been shown that sick people that will go so far as to hurt or even kill an animal, will do the same to a person who is defenseless: children, elderly, women, spouse, parter or complete stranger. Anyone that has taken psychology classes or done any research on Serial Killers will see a direct connection to animal abuse which started when the Abuser/Killer was young. Combating animal abuse protects people...and animals...plain & simple.

I live here in Maine and I am proud that our law-makers have passed this vital law. It's a huge step in protecting families & their pets from the abusers. Unfortunately, our state has had a very long & dark history of domestic violance and animal abuse. I have been close to more than one person who has experienced both and were lucky to escape with their pets & their lives but not after suffering much abuse. Further, I also have family that were not so lucky and did not escape and unfortunately they are no longer with us to speak up and support this Bill.

A person that will hurt or kill a defenseless animal in retaliation or just for fun is a very sick and dangerous individual that needs to be off our streets for the safety of all...and it does not take a Rocket Scientist to figure that one out.

p-patty what I am talking about is getting to the point of a temp order would be nice and then a court date

it should not take 3 month to get a temporay or a court date this guy that did this has had enough time to arrange funaral and dig a hole by hand and put me in it but after contacting the right people that keeps an eye on judges thing seem to be going as the law state it should.

the judge in this case has the thought that I am dunb on the law and I study it every night from 12:00pm to 3:00am just so they can't duke me an I let it go and turned him in on his actions now he can go jump ropes like I had to

I did get a court date after backing the court house in the corrner

And again.....Give me a break!!!! My name is withheld to prevent you sicko's from hunting me down because of my opinion. It's pretty sad when a state, or nation for that matter, will give animals and homosexual's their "rights," and then kill off every unwanted baby. You people really are ALL "sicko's." I wouldn't purposely kill any animal unless it was for food or to protect myself. I also live in Maine. I don't come from domestic abuse and I've never done it. Guess that kills your theory! Go back to school and learn how to spell. Your email is full of mistakes.
