Lake parents worry about potential cuts in school-bus service

Full story: Orlando Sentinel

Lake County education officials are considering eliminating "courtesy" bus service for students living within two miles of their schools as a cost-savings measure, but the transportation cuts could mean many more children walking by the homes of registered sex offenders each day.

I mapquested from Colonial Pines aparments what the mileage was and was a little over 2 miles however all tenants in there received a letter that their child didn't qualify for a bus. When I questioned it I was informed they check it from the closest entrance of the school to the sign at Colonial Pines. The closest entrance to the school is the parking lot that gets used for over flow parking at the school. They are cutting out low income housing here. You take a family living in low income housing that has one car and say 2 kids. They are supposed to get up both children walk their child 2 miles to school and then walk 2 miles back possibly with a toddler or infant child. Then that is repeated again in the afternoon. That is 8 miles a day. Get a grip people. In 2 miles a elementary child could be lost or obducted. In my case I live accross 441 and I can and will drive my children to school. But what about the ones that can't? These children are supposed to cross 441. Most parents work how is this supposed to work? I always loved living in lake county where it was large enough to have what you need and small enough that people still cared. I guess that has changed.

Hello people, our public schools are to provide education. They aren't there to provide transportation or babysitting or parenting. Parents tend to forget things like that. Please take some responsiblity for your children.

Restricting where sex offenders live came about as a result of Jessica's Law.

Twenty two states have residing restrictions for paroled sex offenders.

In California they have a new law stating that every paroled sex offender must wear a tracking device.

Parole agents walk around with a hand held GPS device that gives a readout of where there clients[paroled sex offenders] are at all times.

In Long Beach, Ca. parole agents claim there is no place where these parolees can go. They are always within restricted areas of some park or school.

As a result of this many parolees become homeless, living wherever they can pitch a tent.

According to officials these clients would be much better off having a place to live. Parole officers could much more easily be able to track them.

And there is a big question as to whether tracking paroled sex offenders is constitutional.

The conclusion is with the invariability of paroled sex offenders at some time during the day will walk into a restricted are.

That all the citizenry want to do is keep the sex offender, who has paid for his crime, in prison forever, and as we all know that is wrong.

Cut out some of those personnel that are getting over $100,000 a year that are not in the classroom...and there probably is enough savings to keep busing the kids. Two miles without safe conditons is not worth a child losing his/her life.
Or, how about school board members give up half of their ridiculous salary for a start.
Find other ways to trim, and keep the kids first, for a change.

Nelson made, circuitously but well, that if these sex offenders are such a threat, why are we letting them out of prison? After leaving prison, they are supposed to be integrated back into society. Except, society keeps pushing around and out. Sex offenders have a lesser recidivism rate than murderers and bank robbers; we don't have the same laws covering their release from prison.

And the expense of tracking and control! We don't have the money to pay our teachers, but we somehow keep coming up with the cash to pay for legal controls of our citizenry. No money for education and health, often not much for fire and police protection, but lots for prisons and control.

It is obvious from the headlines over the past few months that Florida has no regard what so ever for its' most innocent citizens.

Sex offenders have enough opportunity to view a full menu at our theme parks and resorts, why would anyone seek to give them more?

The answer, the school board decided that the principal's $110,000.00 a year salary and their 80,000.00 annual salaries will not suffer, it is easier to sacrifice the kids.

Don't the kids walk by the homes of registered sex offenders every day? If they live in the neighborhood, the kids are walking by the houses of registered sex offenders all the time.

If they're using the proximity of sex offenders as a reason to make school policy and/or budget decisions, that School Board is as worthless as the Orange County's.

"An Orlando Sentinel analysis of school locations and database addresses of Lake's convicted sex offenders shows every public school in the county has at least one sex offender living within two miles of it. In fact, Lake County Sheriff's Office online sex-offender records show that 12 public schools in Lake have more than 20 sex offenders living two miles or less from their front doors."

Which is strongly indicates that the law is meant to label every fool who looks at a member of the opposite sex with a gleam in their eye... a sex offender.

What a bunch of blatantly misleading hype.

Why don't the parents take responsibility for getting their children to school. Oh wait, that's right. Parents are supposed to give birth to the children and everyone else is supposed to raise them. Stupid me! I am one of those silly people who actually think its up to me to raise my kids.

According to the logic of this argument as framed by this article, schools have a responsibility of wrapping every child in a perfectly safe cocoon at their doorstep and getting them to school and back home again perfectly safe and free from all possible harm. And we must cut any other program to help pay for this.
Absurd.

Exactly!!!!!! Unless there is a lack of transportation at that hour, there's NO EXCUSE for parents not being parents. Raise your little mongrels yourselves, worthless pieces of S HIT!!!!!!!!!!

I walked to school in the 60s and yes there were perv's then but not as many as there is now. There also wasnt as much traffic. And I say cut other programs how about if we start with food stamps. I see family's getting up to $700 a month in food stamps. I don't care how big your family is you don't need that much food.

I think it is up to me to raise my children too. I also think I should have some say in where my tax payer dollars go. Or are you one of those that gets back $1000s in earned income credit? Money that you don't have to pay in.

Daily Horoscope for December 26

Scorpio

Something that you've always taken for granted or believed implicitly could have a big question mark hanging over it during the next few weeks. The more entrenched your views are about this, the more difficult it will be to accept that perhaps it's time for a change of opinion or, at the very least, a revaluation of what you think. Mercury turns retro in your house of communications, so do your best to be open-minded now.
