Another elderly driver dies, yet again. In a traffic accident.

Woodtv, are you ever going to address this serious problem?!

Condolences to the family, but I again ask how safe it is for an 83 year old person to be behind the wheel of a car. Especially with a known "medical condition."

You're right...but don't expect a media verdict...they're obsessed with gas prices incesantly...right with the safety issue, but don't expect any change from the state at all.

There are countless people 16+ driving with "medical" conditions.

My condolences to the family.

What if there had been someone on the sidewalk? That is two blocks from my house, my sons walk along Burlingame all the time!!!!

Elderly people need to take driving tests, period. Driving isn't a right, it's a privilege, and they need to prove that they are able to drive in order to do so, just like teenagers do.

My heart goes out to the family. I'm sorry for your loss. To all you others saying she shouldn't be on the road, what's your problem? My grandmother is 83 and drives, she doesn't go too far but an accident could still happen. She drives good, she goes the speed limit and pays attention. The lady had a medical condition, do any of you know what it was? When you turn 70 are you going to just go give up your license? Probably not. I'm 24 years old and have narcolepsy I take medication and I'm absolutely fine should I not be allowed to drive? This is stupid that you guys are even bringing this shit up when this poor womens family is greiving. Any one of you could have a heart attack when driving at any age and kill yourself or someone else.

To concerned citizen... The way the social security is set up I will have to work until I am 75. Do you expect me to walk? Ride a bike?
Accidents happen to everyone.

My heart goes out to the family, I am so sorry for your loss.

My condolences to the family.
You are talking abuot this poor lady that just lost her life in a trafic accident. Well, what about all the people including teens who insist on driving while talking on the phone. They should not be driving either. Look how many accidents that causes. And then there are the people that drink and drive. If youare going to condem the elderely driving them you need to condem everyone.

I think they should have to take a driving test, not just automatically get their license renewed.

Age slows reaction time. You should have to prove you are able to drive well before getting your license. The way it is right now, they just get a notice in the mail, send in their money, and boom, they get renewed for another 4 years, no questions asked.

My mother is 81, and drives well, too. Doesn't mean she shouldn't have to prove that she is still able to drive.

If you are caught driving while drunk you lose your privilege to drive.

I was rear-ended by an elderly man because I had to make a sudden stop and he couldn't stop in time. My sister was walking at a strip mall and was hit by an elderly man who mistook the accelerator for the brake. A couple weeks ago a car full of people driven by an elderly driver was hit because he pulled out in front of a truck. In Santa Monica, an elderly man mowed down people at a farmers market, killing 9 and wounding 45. He drove for blocks with people under his car.

Many elderly people can drive just fine, but many others cannot. They should have to prove they can, just like teenagers do.

my condolences also go out to the family. Please stop being so mean with your comments. You don't know the whole situation, and if it was due to a medical condition, oh my goodness it can happen to anyone at any age! My mother-in-law passed away at the age of 49 and up until then we thought she was in perfect health.
To the lady's family, I will be praying for you as you go thru this time in your life.

Why is it mean to expect someone to have the ability to correctly operate a motor vehicle?

I agree that the elderly people should have to take a driving tests but do you realize that heart attacks or blacking out can happen to anyone at any age.

Based on what I have seen driving over 100 miles a day for work, elderly people driving is definitely not an issue wood tv needs to cover. However, the driving abilities of the entire population in general along with the way police officers seem to ignore these lawless drivers is. It is rare to see police officers in my 100 + mile a days journeys and even more rare to see someone actually pulled over despite the numerous people on the roads who can not follow the rules/laws. And I am amazed every day at how many people of all ages and genders speed in any and all road conditions regardless of the surroundings.(It's even more amazing when it's women with kids or people with a reference to Jesus on their cars...as if that's how Jesus would drive.) I am also amazed at how many people can barely even yield at stop signs, as well as how many people turn without turn signals, or use lanes SPECIFICALLY designed for TURNING ONLY to pass people. And what's up with people not using turning lanes to turn anymore? I would bet good money that if every intersection in the USA were a 4 - way stop there STILL would be tons of deadly head on accidents caused by people coming from different directions and running the stop signs at the same time....and it would have nothing to do with age.

My prayers to the family.
I think that everyone, no matter what age, needs to take a driving test at renewal time in order to prove that they are capable of being a good driver.
Too many young and middle aged people forget the rules and drive like idiots.

I'm so sorry for the family's loss. This was an accident, and anything could happen to any one of us at any time. Many people who drive, young and old, have medical conditions.

For all of you who are criticizing this elderly lady, let me tell you that there are plenty of younger people that also should not be driving.

My prayers and condolences are with the family.

My 95 year old neighbor drives...but only to go to the store and back. She actually drives quite safely. I don't think it's all about how old you are, but how mentally aware you are and how safe you drive. It's not just elderly people who cause accidents...I see plenty of young adults on the road who cause their fare share too!
