I just happened to come across this site as I was searching for stuff about my home town that I grew up in Cambridge of course. I was looking to see if the Lutheran mission shop was still around. I wanted to show my wife where we would go to find clothes when times were tight back in the 70s and 80s.the mission shop as it was known in Cambridge and in school had to be one of the best kept secrets that you hoped to keep from the rest of the kids at school since your parents went there to shop. That was one of the “shams” as we called it back then. I have no problem today going in there when I get back home. I think because just being downtown reminds me of the fun days of growing up there in the 70s. I can recall going into Woolworths and checking out all of the rubber monster toys, some of which I still have today. There was an old man in there that smoked a cigar that always seemed like he tried to scare off the kids that came into the store. And then there was McCroyers five and dime. Used to go there in the back and see the bird cages and fish tanks. Plenty of places to have fun no matter what age you were. Downtown Cambridge has a lot of history for me and many others.Theres plenty of bad things that have went on over the years, but also some very good times have been had by many there. Keep watching I will post again soon. Let’s see some replies and memories posted on here.

No memory of Cambridge can be complete without memories of the old East Side gang Baseball Fred Hughes, Clay Fleming Beebee Bob Kirwan Rita petitt, Mason and Tamara Little,Dave Smith,Ed Meredith, faith Kathy Gabriel this group ruled the social and politcal scene in the 70 and still today. Baseball is so poplar that visitors get their pictures taken with him like pictures taken with Mickey Mouse. From hanging up Tamara's drawers at Cambridge Green to doingg Candy Fox while Bob slept this group typlifies what Cambridge people are known for good old down to earth fun. Remember Super Bowl patries at Calvin Travers house. Danny Marsh natonal covered egg eating contest. Lotteries and dancing at Sportsman bar. You need not be rich to have fun.

Sorry for the mispellings. I'm was in a hurry. Us Talbot County educated intellectuals can't spell when the pressure is on. Tell capt Kozy to go hang out with Coach Bill Butler because he knows what hanging out is all about.

Mike , you brought back some great times with the video on youtube. I was there along with several other people that I know in the vid. Hey remeber the guy on Washington street that ate live crabs. He was on the show " Thats Incredible " He lived down the street from me , I lived across from KOOL ICE and Seafood , maybe you know who I am. We used to go over to the bowling alley and play Wizard of Wor., the arena pool was a great hangout in the summertime. And the blast of the 80s was shen Woody Plescott opened the Roller Rink on 50 and mount holly road. those were fun times in Cambridge.

well I did leave and served aorund the world for over ten years, sometimes living in other countries. Yes I agree there are aspects of Cambridge that may not be so nice. but I did have alot of good times as a kid and teenager in the 70s and early 80s. Lets get real , even my parents told me about the Easton and Cambridge rival groups. Some of that was still around on our days im sure. Im not sure how old you are, but I can say that I also loved Talbot County , if for no other reasons than The Ferry Boat Bar And the Trappe Drive INN. They were good times. I seen movies such as the Incredible Melting Man there in the mid 70s before it was turned into a XXX place. I think we both share some good memories of the area no matter which side of the bridge we are from brother. |

Remember the music battles of the 70s and 80s. The roots of this began in the late 60s and early 70s with the formation of rock bands such as Es Grit, Luke, Irons Image,Tasu. By the late 70s these bands had morphed into Drawbridge and Transfuzion. Then in the late 70s a group of CSDHS,not CHS students formed the funk?disco band Mendacity. A leading member of the band was Chet McWilliams who worked on teh city garbage truck one summer dressed as a Blues Brother. This became quite a battle with the older CHS grads liking the rock bands while the CSDHS students and blacks liked Mendacity. The two of the leaders of the antidisco crowd were mullet wearing Drawbridge members Mark Gootte and Ed Collison. This was a big rift amoung people throughout the nation, a large "disco sucks" riot occured at a Chicago White Sox game in a promotion put on by Talbot's own Veeck family. The rock bands still exists in the form of Transfuzion,Golden Touch and Mid life Crisis. They play to the same group they always had like classic rock today.Mendacity members have moved on just as disco has morphed into high tech dance music play electronically, not live. Cambridge always reflects life in America.

Recently, a very nice guy from a nice family, Ray Loyd(class of 79) died in Cecil County. Ray as a young teenager had oneof th e worst things in the world happen to him,he was molested by the priest at St Mary's Catholic Church. Many years later Ray did receive a little money but it never heals the damage. He was not the only boy Father Power molested and St Mary's was not the only parish he did this act. Of course the Catholic Church covered it up for years. Unfortunatly, in the 70"s and 80's sexual impropiarity be adults in authority positions toward underage people was all too common and unreported.csdhs english teacher, the late Alex Introcaso made school year long attempts of bedding Magery Shenton(73),Valerie Matthews(75) and Betsy Malkus(77) respectively.phys ed teacher Art Johnstone had an affair with Student Lyn Seward(75). But by far the worst offense was by track coach Dick Douglas. Douglas, who is English, was known for making nasty comments to female students, one time asking the late Lisa Andrewswhether she was "ateaser or a pleaser". But the affaiar he had with track team member Mellissa Garcia broke all rules. Douglas carried on a multi year sexual affair with the shy impressionable Garcia. It was not usually for a student to go into Mr Douglas's classroom after school or at lunch and find him having sex with her in the closet. He actually quit his job and followed her to college where she finally became strong enough to get rid of him.Intocaso,Johnstone and Douglas all got away with it. In the late 80's the pastor of Immanual Churh of Christ and his wife had sex with a 16year old girl but at least they were punished. In this dark chapter of the 70's and 80's Cambridge again reflected the world.

Before I write furhter I'd like to thank everyone who has blogged under this topic. As you can see I am very detailed about names places etc.when I write. This is not only to present the facts in detail on how I remember them or they were told to me(to be debated and corrected by other blogger of course). But many times in the best blog sites a name place, event etc. can lead to a discussion on a whole other thing besides what the blog was about which is fun. For instance a comment I saw one time about crusing 4th st in Wilmington DE in the early 60"s in a 59 Impala convertible lead to a discussion about every car dealer in town at the time and who worked there. Will come out with some more blogs soon. Thanks again.

Does anyone remember Barbara Burns? CHS Chemistry Teacher. Many young men are grateful to her for their introduction to manhood. Double standard?
Cambridge was a terrible place to grow up and wonderful at the same time. The cancer of racism running in both directions, the struggles with the desegregation, and lets not forget world class mosquitoes. Cambridge was an industrial town and the factory exodus in the 70’s and 80’s did nothing for the people. It was nice to see that Cambridge was turning around a few years ago, although much of the construction has stopped. Class of ’74 rules. |

Rich Wolf,
Being raised on the Shore, you understand discretion and honor. It would have been far better if you had used initials instead of the names of the girls that the teacher rats preyed upon in the 70s. It wasn't the girls' fault. I hope the Moderator will make this editing adjustment. Unfortunately, I can confirm some of your assertions. But the Chemistry teacher, BB, introducing young men to manhood - are you sure? You have me now wondering who was once her smitten puppy. |
